  • UK News! Will the so-called Dryathelon do a lot of damage to Britain's struggling pub industry?

In January people are being encouraged not to drink any alcohol. That will mean many people taking part, will simply not bother going out to their local pub. No body is going to pay £3 for an orange juice or drink water.

(Btw I'm not taking part or sponsoring this dryathlon in any way!)

It maybe just 1 month but pubs make a lot of their money on the alcohol they serve. They buy in x number of barrels and have to pay for that from customers money. That may not sell and bills don't get paid.

A beer or wine goes well with socialising and conversation. That's why people go to pubs. If they're going to say alcohol free, they may just not bother with pubs and stay home. After a month they may feel comfortable staying home noticing that they've saved money and not bother going back to the pub. That is a customer lost.

The smoking ban did a lot of damage because a lot of people enjoyed a smoke with their pint at the bar. Now those customers are lost.

Many pubs are still recovering from the 2007 smoking ban which was a double whammy when they fell victim to the 2008 great recession. Money taken at the bar generally pays bills and debts and not huge profits.

Is it totally irresponsible of organisers to put on such an event at a time when local businesses are struggling?

  • UK news. Should welfare benefits increase the longer a person is on them?

If a person is on JSA for more than 2 years should the weekly payment be increased as it shows commitment form that person?

Just like if you do a job you get a pay rise the longer you're in that job and more holiday allowance. Should it not be the same for Jobseekers?

It also shows they have spent longer than anyone else showing the commitment to look for a job even though they did not get one.

Shall we say £85 per week for first 2 years

£100 a week until 4 years on JSA

£150 a week until 6 years on JSA

    With an increase every year.

  • US News. Is New York descending to the lawlessness and chaos of the 1970s and 80s?

Two NY cops have just been murdered. Crime is rapidly rising in NYC.

Back in the early 2000s NYC became the envy of the world in how Rudy Guiliani had turned the city around, zero tolerance policing, no go areas would be taken back street by street. The subway would become much safer. Muggers and thugs were driven from the streets.

NYC becaome one of the worlds safest cities and most New Yorkers were pround and wanted it to stay like that. Of course many liberals want to go back to the lawless 70s and 80s.

In the 70s and 80s, NYC was a dirty dangeous city full of drugs, muggers and murderers. The subway was filthy and very dangerous, heavily vanadalized, urine smelling trains used as toilets, occupied by muggers and drug addicts. Whole city blocks were unpoliced no go areas and totally unsafe for any outsiders. There were over 20 murders a week, many of them unprovoked random killings.

Why are so many liberals against the work of Guiliani do they really want NYC to be like it was in the 70s and 80s?

Do the people of NYC really want to go back to those times? Is NYC in danger of becomming a lawless violent city again?

  • How would you set up a company making kit cars?

So some classic cars like the VW beetle and Citroen 2CV can be built from scrach as all the parts, chassis, body panels etc are available to buy.

Would it be possible to set up a company selling a package of all the car parts with instructions for customers to assemble the car?

How would you get permission form the original manufacturer such as VW or. Citroen? Would you have to buy a licence and would this be expensive?

I know with the original beetle there is a huge market of people who'd like one.

What reasons may the original manufacturer have for refusing licence to produce kit versions of a car they no longer produce?

  • UK news. Is building your own house really cheaper than buying a ready built house?

So you're unable to get on the property ladder because it's too expensive. Some say that self build is the cheapest way to have your own house, but is it?

Yes you can build a house for around £30,000 if you do most of the labour yourself, bricklaying, joinery etc and materials for house building are tax free.

The problem is the cost of a plot of land.

In Southwest England an average plot of land for a 3 bed house and small garden is around £150,000 for the cheapest plot. Yet in the same neighbourhood ready built 3 bed houses cost £190,000.

So if you build your own you will only save about £10,000 and most of that will be wasted in planning fees, accommodation etc.

In Northern England self build is still a no brainer. An average plot of land in somewhere like Rotherham or Middlesbourgh for a 3 bed house and small garden may cost from £5000 to £10,000. Plus £30,000 to build the house. Yet a house in the same neighbourhood sells for £35,000 maximum!

As for London self build is not an option as there is no space even if it was, a parking space costs over £150,000!

    Is self build a no-brainer?

  • UK News. Is air travel really worth the stress?

Is it me or is everyone fed up with the stress of air travel?

You get to the airport constantly worried that your luggage may be too heavy and that the scales you used were inaccurate.

Then you have to get rid of all liquids before passing through security and once in departures a small bottle of water costs a fortune. (why can't they have a Poundland in airports?)

As if that's not enough you reach they great fun of security you have to remove your shoes, your trouser belt, watch empty your pockets, remove laptops etc from your luggage, then they ask you to completely empty out your rucksack that took like two hours to pack.

Then when it's eventual time to board your panic that your hand luggage is a mm too big and you will not be allowed to take it or get fined.

    Coming home.

You can guarantee that the transfer coach for the half hour journey to airport will pick up at a ridiculously early time like 5am so you miss the breakfast that you paid for when booking the holiday, despite your flight being at 3pm!

You then have the pleasure of nearly 9hrs waiting in an unfair conditioned airport bored to insanity. Is it worth it?

Any other experiences of the misery of air travel?

  • Poll: Am I been to harsh on my friend who has committed an offence?

My friend has commit welfare fraud by not telling them he is washing cars for money.

As a well respected member of the local community and church go-er I was so angry and no longer speak to them. I tore up the Xmas card he sent.

My face is still red and I'm think of reporting him to welfare people.

Problem is he has few friends and if I tell people in the community centre he will have no friends at all.

Am I being to harsh? Or am I doing something for the greater good?

  • Poll: Should I report my friend for welfare fraud?

My friend is a former jockey who has to claim welfare social security after his career ended due to a back injury.

He has been doing a little gardening and car washing for elderly people for extra money.

He has not told the welfare people about his income Should I report him even though he could get jail time for fraud and his welfare terminated?

I feel as a respected member of the community and church I should be honest. I hope he will understand and maybe getting prosecuted can help him reflect and repent.

  • Uk news. Is banning the unemployed from buying cigarettes an no brainer and a humans rights violation?

UKIP and the Tories have considered banning unemployed peoples from buying cigarettes. But that is stupid.

    1) The government would loose a lot of money on tobacco tax because a lot of poorer peoples are smokers.

    2) Its not the fault of jobless people that cigarettes are extortionately expensive. The government is to blame for charging so much tax. The real price of a pack of 20 should be less than £2!

    3) Tobacco is a legal substance for people aged over 16. Banning people who are legally entitled to buy cigarettes is a violation of their human rights. They could sue the government.

    4) it seems the government wants to deny the poorest people in society namely the unemployed from having any pleasures even if it costs the country in lost tax and leads to black market imported cigarettes.

Is it a complete no brainer?

  • Could NATO allow Russian bases in Turkey as compensation for sanctions?

Russia has lost a lot of money through trade sanctions in a misunderstanding with the west.

Turkey is a NATO country that wants membership in the Commonwealth of Independent States or even the EU.

As compensation and an apology for this years misunderstanding , could NATO offer parts of the Turkish coast line to Russia for them to set up military naval bases?

    12 AnswersMilitary6 years ago
  • For Xmas goodwill, will the EU, NATO and the USA apologise to Russia?

The majority of people think that the west has been too aggressive against Russia.

Mr Putin is only doing what is right after an illegal coup in Ukraine. Russia is only trying to promote peace, but has faced aggressive action from the west.

Will people like Cameron and Obama admit they are wrong and as a Xmas goodwill gesture apologise to Russia and compensate them for any money lost due to sanctions? Perhaps NATO could give the Russians access to the North coast of Turkey to allow for Russian Black sea military bases? That would also help Russia send supplies across Turkey to help Mr Assad.

  • Is Nigel Farrage a good role model?

You often see pictures of Nigel Farrage outside pubs smoking a cigarette. I smoke myself but in this anti smoking era is Mr Farrage setting a good example to people by being seen smoking?

I know he is trying to come across as a common man but its a bit hypocritical that he intends to ban the unemployed from buying cigarettes. So want sort of message does that send out?

  • Why won't adobe flash videos play on my lap top?

    Hi

I tried to play a video on a website and was told to install a 'plug in' which I did and I installed adobe Flash player version 10.

I restarted the laptop and tried to play the video but it stopped completely after less than a minute. Some videos still wont play at all.

I have Mozilla firefox browser which has issues with earlier versions of flash player but I read that flash player 10 does not have these issues.

  • UK news. Should the unemployed be allowed free car tax?

My friend just got his 6 month car tax in and its £113.95 for 6 months!

He is unemployed and can't afford to get one of these new cars with zero tax as they won't give him finance.

Should car tax be free for the jobless? As if the cost of living isn't high enough?

Surely it wouldn't be that hard DVLA and DWP are both government departments and DVLA could check a person is jobless and wave their road tax.

  • UK news. Can English Jobseekers claim Job seekers allowance In Gibraltar?

    Hi

If a person is out of work in England can they move to Gibraltar to claim the Gibraltar equivalent of Jobseeker's Allowance?

The reason I ask is because Gibraltar is part of England but has nice weather and is next to Spain. Plus I doubt they have sanctions like we do.

Would you also get housing benefits in Gibraltar?

Are there any links to the Gibraltese benefits system?

I've also considered the Channel Islands too.

    Please advise

    Thanks.

  • Does chewing peppermint after smoking a cigarette prevent mouth cancer?

When you smoke a peppermint gum helps get rid of the bad taste and hides the smell of your breath from teachers parents etc.

So if it cleans your mouth then does it takeaway the things in cigarettes that cause cancer?

If it does then people can smoke without the risk of cancer if they have peppermint gums after a smoke.
