UK news. Should the unemployed be allowed free car tax?

My friend just got his 6 month car tax in and its £113.95 for 6 months!

He is unemployed and can't afford to get one of these new cars with zero tax as they won't give him finance.

Should car tax be free for the jobless? As if the cost of living isn't high enough?

Surely it wouldn't be that hard DVLA and DWP are both government departments and DVLA could check a person is jobless and wave their road tax.

Update:

I think in Norway the jobless get free road tax. Should Britain not be the same?

  • To be honest, the idea of giving the unemployed a freebee sticks in the throat of a lot of people. This question is like a red rag to a bull. If I was a cynical person I'd wonder if the question was designed to do just that very job.

Running a car on JSA is damn near impossible. I do understand the need for transport in rural areas. A lot of jobs can be in hard to reach areas, that are not easy to access with public transport.

At the moment I don't think there would be an appetite for such support. It would only benefit a few claimants, as most do without cars. The money is needed for far more vital support.

I'd scrap car tax and replace it with fuel duty. That would benefit everyone. Of course it would mean more at the pump, but that would encourage smaller, more efficient, vehicles and more walking.

I'm getting worried now, I actually knew who was asking this before I clicked on the question.

So he's unemployed but he can afford to keep a car on the road? No they shouldn't be 'given' road tax because people who work hard all day and hardly get to see their kids will have to pay for it. Why should that be?

I'm sick of this, poor me I don't have a job it's so unfair the world owes me everything blah blah blah. If we all quit our jobs tomorrow and joined you and your mate, the economy would be destroyed and you'd find that there would very quickly be no more 'free' anything for anyone. It'd be all out civil war. The working man and woman are the reason you get 'free' prescriptions, 'free' rent, 'free' healthcare, now you're asking if you can have 'free' road tax too?

I feel like taking the two of you outside

No. He uses the roads and sadly he should pay. Otherwise two people living in a house together, one could be technically unemployed, hence we'd end up paying for the road tax for the car and yet the employed other person could use that car !

Does he have to pay the tax in one go? Or can't they spread the cost perhaps ?

Car tax is heavily weighted against the poor as its higher on cheap old cars. So, yeah why not? After all, ppl on the sick who already "earn" considerably more than many working ppl, let alone on ppl on JSA, get free car tax.

The problem many unemployed ppl face is they can't get a car without a job and can't get a job without a car ...

If we're willing to encourage the Vicky Pollards of this world to have 5 kids on welfare, then YES, we should do more for ppl really looking for work.

Absolutely not. A car is not an essential of life. Benefits are only meant to pay for essentials. He can jolly well take the bus.

Or in London, once you have been registered unemployed for 6 months you get half price bus fares.

Tell him to get his lazy @rse on a bike and find a job. I had to move 450 miles away from home to find work and live in digs when I left school. There was very little work in my locality. I couldn't afford a bike until I was 18 far less a car.
