Shortness of breath - anxiety?

I am a sufferer of depression and have been under a lot of pressure lately, panicking about deadlines for work etc. Occasionally, and especially at night, I go through periods of extreme shortness of breath, where I have to really focus in order to breathe correctly, and the more I focus on it the worse it gets. I never quite find myself fighting for breath but it is very difficult. My mind does race a lot and I've heard that the two can synchronise. I went to the doctor and he examined me very briefly and said it was likely just anxiety, but it happens even when I'm not necessarily feeling anxious? I've looked it up on the internet but I don't really have symptoms of other things. What could it be? Is it likely to be dangerous or could the doctor be right? Either way what do I do because it's driving me insane, not to mention scaring me?

Update:

Thanks for your answers guys, but what I'm asking is does this sound like anxiety to you or a physical condition?

One of the differences between having anxiety and having an anxiety disorder is that when its natual anxiety it usually occurs under stressful situations. when its a disorder the time and place is no longer an issue. I have several diagnosed anxiety disorders and for me its very frustrating when I have panic attacks or get extremely anxious when there's no "reason" for it. My anxiety still increases when I'm in a stressful situation, but it also increases during times when I'm not feeling anxious at all. Thats part of the nature of the disorder. and everyone experiences it differently. Maybe try going back to your doctor and asking him if perhaps you have an anxiety disorder such as generalized anxiety disorder.

Edit: to be properly diagnosed with an anxiety disorder they have to rule out various physical conditions as well. The doctor should give you some routine exams, and if they do come back normal the chances are high that its anxiety. What you described sounds like anxiety to me. I've had the same problems with shortness of breath and needing to focus. so thats based on my own personal experience. but its a good idea to rule out physical causes.

Go back to your doctor and explain it again. Ask for blood work to be done. If nothing shows up

then the chances are good it's anxiety.

When you are having the breathing problem give this a try. Put on some music that you like and can sing to, singing will help to regulate your breathing.

When you can't do this breath in deeply to the count of 4 make sure your stomach rises the part below your belly button. Breath out slowly to the count of 4. Repeat about 5 times to make sure you are getting enough oxygen.

I sometimes have shortness of breath and feel like I can't breathe especially when I'm worried or stressed. I have panic attacks and when that happens its really hard to breathe and it does get worse for me too when I focus on it. What you have to do is take your mind off of things and just relax. Maybe call up a friend or watch something funny or entertaining that will take your mind off of work and freaking out. Life isn't worth living if you can't just relax and have fun sometimes. When you start freaking out, your work is the last thing you need to worry about.

Lexapro made my heart beat extremely hard. I have now been put on prozac 20mg and feel MUCH better. I tried Effexor for 2 days too and that was awful. You could be experiencing withdrawal symptoms from the Paxil. It's known for making you feel quite nasty after you stop taking it. Everyone is different and Lexapro works for some people, but it only increased my anxiety and dependence on lorazepam to control the attacks.
