How much should one earn to support family of 4 in Australia?

How much should one earn in Australian Dollar to be able to support a family of 4, rent & utilities, etc. and live comfortably in Sydney?

This depends on a huge numbers of factors. Where in Sydney you live, public or private schooling, car ownership, how much you eat and where you shop, what luxuries you want (such as pay TV) e.t.c.

However I can give you some ideas based on my own expenses, I live in Campbelltown which is in the south western suburbs of Sydney, approximately 1 hour by train from the city centre. It is also one of the cheaper parts of Sydney to live in.

I rent a 3 bedroom home at $240/week going to $260/week next month. The average rent for a 3 bedroom home out here is $300/week. My gas (not petrol natural gas for heating/cooking e.t.c) is about $300 every 3 months, with electricity about $500 every 3 months. If you don't have gas for heating and cooking your electricty will be higher. Telephone is roughly $150/month including 2 mobiles at $40/month each. We don't make many phone calls and none overseas. There are plenty of options for telephone though. Internet is about $50/month for a decent ADSL plan. I'm won't include the car as it is new and we are paying it off. On average most families pay between $100 and $200/week in petrol, depending on distance to work if they drive to work and what activities the kids do as well as what type of car they have. Also you need to insure the car (voluntary but a good idea), which varies, as well as registration which costs about $500/year on top compulsory Third Party Insurance (Green Slip and this is on top of the other voluntary insurance you may get) which costs between $300 and $600/year depending on your age, age of car and whether or not you have voluntary Comprehensive Car Insurance. Food can cost about $300/week for the average 4 person family with teenagers.

I should also let you know that to rent a home is Sydney you need a total of 4 weeks rent in advance, that is 2 weeks for the bond and 2 weeks advance rent.

In total I'd say you need at least $1000 - $1500/week for the basics. That equates to about $52000/year after tax...roughly $60000/year before tax. If you want more than basics you need to earn more, and to be really comfortable at least about $2000/week would be good.

As mentioned above - it depends on many thing. Most importantly - you need to realise that in Australia, both the husband and wife work full time and the children either spend time in child care or after school programs or are latch key kids. Very few adults end over 100K on their own - and these are mostly highly experience professionals (accountants with their own firm, doctors working FT etc).

So, if you are the only one working - the average wage is around 55K but if you are thinking of migrating you will likely start lower than that and work your way up changing jobs, gaining experience and references. You need to spend as you earn - while on the lower salary that is when you both have to work. When you are on the higher salary that is when you have one partner at home.

I earn about $55K per year, that is enough to allow a single person to live a comfortable but modest lifestyle and rent a 1 bedroom apartment,if I had a family to support on my wage we would be poverty line welfare cases for the rest of our lives.

Of course it depends entirely on your definition of comfort and your family expectations. Some people can manage on fifty thousand a year but generally I would say $100 000 would be ok but would still have to be sensible with expenses. I hope this is helpful.
