Why does the pediatrician want me to introduce a sippy cup so early?

I just got back from my son's 6 month check-up and the pediatrician said it was time to introduce a sippy cup. I'm just curious why we are supposed to introduce it so early. He doesn't have any teeth and I know from my dentist that sippy cups are just as bad on the jaw as bottles so why the early introduction?

Update:

I'm curious if there's a medical reason, like a decreased risk of ear infections, or if it's it just to give them practise.

It's just for practice at this age.

We only ever offered water in the sippy and only offered it with solids until baby was older. Closer to a year, we'd offer juice and then cow's milk. My oldest didn't get the hang of it until 11-12 months because we didn't offer it very often. My middle child started swiping her big sister's sippies at about 8 months. ;-) With my youngest, I really don't remember, but I know he was drinking water from a sippy by 9-10 months.

Technically, there's no need for sippy either, except for baby to be able to hold it and not spill. Once my kids could grab my cup, I'd let them have sips of my water, so that's fine, too.

Your pediatrician is behind. He is still under the false belief that bottles cause crooked teeth. More than 10 years of kids using sippy cups have proven otherwise. Dentists have since identified that crooked teeth are caused by genetics, mouth breathing or unconscious tongue thrust. Almost never bottles.

In addition, there is the concern about bottle caries. This was not an issue until the introduction of commercial formula and the now widespread use of juice for infants. Cavities in infant teeth are now common due to the higher bacteria concentration in commercial formula (uncommon in homemade formula using regular whole store bought milk). If you want to avoid bottle caries, don't give your kid juice (use whole, cut up fruit instead) and don't give him formula for nap or bedtime bottle - just water.

they are only there to check the health and progression of the child and to advise the parents. If you believe they are wrong in introducing the sippy cup, then dont. Wait a few more months and then introduce it, just because your child isnt doing (whatever) it does not mean there is something wrong with your child.

While he probably won't be able to use it quite yet, this isn't a bad time to introduce it. Baby is probably starting to eat some solids, so he can also be drinking small amounts of water and/or diluted juice. And those beverages are served from a cup, not a bottle.

But if he's happy on the breast alone, you dont' HAVE to start the cup now if you'd rather not.

You can start that early, I put diluted juice in the sippy at 6 months, I was nursing and didn't want any nipple confusion. My son did very well with it too. Good luck! They also make ones with straws if you would be interested in that.

It's mainly just for practice at this age. It doesn't hurt anything if you want to try it out and it doesn't hurt anything if you decide not to. I bought my son a Nubby with handles when he was 6 months but didn't force him to use it. Just kept it siting around the house with water in it and a tiny bit of apple juce and I would say he really figured out how to use i around 10-11 months. It's really up to you if you want to get one or not. Some kids catch on to it really quick and others not so I wouldn't push it if you do decide to get one just keep it around and let him use it if he wants to.

I gave my daughter her's for the first time today! She turned 6 months today and she did great with it! It's good to do because she is drinking a lot of fluids now do to the summer heat and she should stay hydrated just like me!

Some peds just want you to start everything early. I was just told to start rice cereal at 4 months when I don't feel she ready. You don't have to if you don't think it's time yet. Or you can buy a

Source(s): Nuby sippy cup. They have a soft spout. They also sell the sippy cup add on for certain bottles so your baby will be familiar with the bottle and have easier time. Either way trust your mommy instinct
