Every team that made it out of the group stages had a chance to win, it doesn't matter if they were the group winners or not. Football doesn't work that way, if it did it would be very boring and predictable. Besides, just because some team was their group leader doesn't mean they're automatically better than the another team that was runner up or even third or fourth in another group. And no it doesn't make it less interesting that Portugal or Holland aren't in the competition anymore, if anything it is more interesting to see the underdogs advance and destroy the historically more dominant teams.
