Matt, they are talking about commercial whaling, not the whaling done by the Native tribes of north america, or any other minority around the world, they have always been exempt from any ban. Countries like Japan want to hunt whales on a commercial basis, as whale meat is a luxury item and is very expensive. Japan uses the cold harpoon method of whaling because it doesn't destroy much of the meat, but it takes hours for the animal to die. Other countries use a harpoon with an explosive head, that kill the animals quickly. Either way, it is a barbaric act if it is done merely to supply a luxury market. Very few people around the world have to rely on whale meat as a source of protein and for those who do, they are exempt from the ban.

What about native tribes that have hunted whales for generations. For example, the Makah tribe once hunted whales. Whale hunting is part of their traditional lifestyle. Do you believe whale hunting should be banned for those peoples? Just wondering about your opinion on that aspect of the matter.
