Hey - you left out Tony Stewart!
I don't think it's the drivers as much as it is NASCAR trying to control what the drivers can say and do without being fined.
The most interesting drivers today, personality-wise, are the ones who continue to be themselves: Tony Stewart, Kyle Busch, Brad Keselowski, Denny Hamlin, Kevin Harvick and maybe even Joey Logano!

With a few exceptions, the people racing today are not drivers, they are riders. There's not many of them that can take a car that's not perfect to victory lane. Past generations of real race car drivers expected to have to do this week in and week out. I for one am getting tired of riders that constantly complain about their race car. If I was a crew chief, I would have to tell most of them to just pick up their skirts and drive the d*** thing! That's what they get paid to do. I would probably call them Nancy, Sally, or, Mary too-no offense intended to any of the ladies out there.
Rusty Wallace was a driver, so was D.W., The Intimidator was the best there ever was, or, ever will be-yes, better then Richard Petty could ever dream of being. David Pearson, Cale Yarborough, Handsome Harry Gant, and, Junior Johnson are a few more.
The exceptions I referred to before include:
Tony Stewart
Kyle Busch-yes, that's right.
Jeff Gordon, and, Dale Earnhardt Jr.-even though neither has won in quite a while.
So, to answer this question, drivers of the past were, for the most part, better than the riders of today.

'90s for both. Too many drivers get rides today because they are marketable. It is more important to be a pretty boy who is not controversial than it is to be a great driver. I saw Richard Petty in a recent interview say that the number of driver's he has to choose from is lowered by the sponsors. Now we are left with drivers who have the personality of the store cardboard cutouts we see in stores and NASCAR dominated by a few talented drivers.

My driver did ok immediately, I want he ought to have taken Ryan Newman up on the intense area for the time of those very previous couple of laps, i imagine he ought to have had a extra useful probability of prevailing immediately if he had. except Brad, the motive force that shocked me maximum changed into Joe Nemechek. for someone who did not actually have a sponsor for this race till some days in the past to run on the fringe of the front and performance a touch sturdy run going is amazingly impressive. with slightly of success he receives an complete time sponsorship as a thanks to make sure extra of him contained in the races.

The 90ies Cuzz none gave them anything like a luckydawg or a free lap if them boys wanted there lap back they had to earn it I saw Gordon come back from 3 laps down and win the race without that stupid lucky dawg give me old racing back anytime anyday Nascar says these cars are safe let them run it like they had no tommorrow them boys signed them big money contracts they now what they get themselves into every weekend its ok for them to bump draft at 200 mph at superspeedways but not ok to race back to the line its ok to police themselves but you wont let them race below the yellow line if nascar wants to bring fans back theres a start yes you can die on the track but hell nowadays everything will kill ya

The drivers are better today, but they had more character back in the 90s. Some of that has to do with NASCAR itself though.

Gotta be the 90's group on both. Harder racing and they could show more personality on and off the track. Today it's all PC, because of sponsors.

Apples to oranges..
They all drive the same car now.. It makes them look more competitive.. But there are engine differences..
