Surprisingly, He would be remembered as a very strong leader for the following reasons
1.He built the first castles in Britain
2.his cavalry assisted in wars afterwards
3.he trained the troops better as they were mainly peasents instead of well-trained soldiers

I can tell you exactly how William of Normandy is regarded by the English (there wasn't a Britain for nearly a thousand years after William). He was a foreign invader who was responsible for the death of King Harold at the Battle of Hastings, and then used his Norman thugs to impose his reign over the whole of England.. It wasn't a difficult time until William turned up, and he didn't "lead troops astray"; he defeated the army of King Harold. That's it.
