I think he might just need intervals of time where he needs to be alone because he recently went through losing his father. It sounds perfectly natural. Once it's been awhile and he's had some healing time, I'll bet things get increasingly better for you both.

First, give the guy breathing room. Let him go after you and not the other way around. He hates being chased and he has to take initiative in everything.
