Question for the answerers of this area:?

Why is it, that so many of you answer questions in this area when you clearly dont even believe in the remote possibility of something supernatural or paranormal happening? You answer questions without a shred of knowledge in the areas of the sciences involved. Dont get me wrong, i get frustrated aoccasionally too by teenagers who watch "paranormal state" or "the fourth kind" and freak out about a shadow they see in their bedroom, but it doesn't disqualify the topic itself.

Do you answer this stuff just to get your kicks, or just for the points?

Update:

Thanks for all the creative answers guys! Nice to see some of you are above the usual answers I see.

And I don't agree that anyone with a camera, recorder, and temp gun is a paranormal investigator. I head up a group, and I train my members in how to use the tools, what to look for, there's a methodology, and most of those tools are for validation and debunking, at any rate.

We're not ghost-hunters, I suppose...we investigate the claims people make, and strive to show them proof of what happens, and why. The science is there...the methodology is changing as we understand more and share more. I saw an answers earlier that sort of rubbed me the wrong way in other questions...not calling anyone out but I

m glad to see the range of sensible, intelligent answers here.

This is the Science section. Yahoo put this category here so people could get scientific answers to their questions. The question isn't 'why are scientists in the science category', it's 'why are people so opposed to science in the science category'. Believe it or not, many of us are actual scientists, with years of training in how science works and publications in peer-reviewed journals.

EDIT: To the guy below - those people aren't posting here. There are plenty of scientists who have investigated the paranormal, and almost all of them concluded 'it's not there' and those who think it might be still don't have any evidence of it. UFO pictures don't have to be hoaxes, but that doesn't mean they're aliens either. Just something else.

Kettle,I couldn't agree with you any more.I've been in this section for a very long time. When it comes down to it,points don't matter at all here.Too bad we can't exchange them for a monetary value. We both know that the first thing to do when paranormal activity occurs is to try and recreate or debunk the situation.I'm only here to share my personal experiences and to help out where I can.I use to be a skeptic until my experiences couldn't be debunked or recreated. We know to try to find a logical rational explanation before jumping to any conclusions and labeling something paranormal.Any one can claim to be an investigator or a so called scientist.I've found that most so called scientists have no religious faith as well.I also get sick of seeing answers involving the James Randi challenge. It seems to be a pact answer for a lot of skeptics here.I am truly fascinated by all the technical equipment that is out there now.I've had quite a few experiences over my life time and I'm now 54 years old.I can remember from being a very young age,I always loved any scary movies that I saw.Since my experiences, this has become a huge interest of mine and will remain to be.

There is a lot of fake stuff out there so an amount of skepticism is sometimes good. But there is also real stuff for which skepticism then becomes counter-productive.

A lot of the so-called "scientist" around here suffer from what is called paradigm blindness, which which they cannot see past a certain realm of limited thinking. They fail to realize that a lot of the spiritual experience is subjective, that given the parameters of how the universe operates, their own beliefs perpetuates that they will be stuck in the small box of their own thinking. So their own egos leads them to believe they know everything when they know little or nothing. Like one of the answerer's said there is a difference between thinking and knowing the thruth.

I realize that there are lots of kids out there who ask silly questions here. It can really get rinkie-dink here.

I answer questions here because investigation of paranormal & personal experiences. I answer here because I am disabled at the time and being here on answers helps me pass time.

You will find that myself and a few other Answer-Members who are serious paranormal believers.

I answer because some people honestly don't know what to do, so i tell them to consult a professional.

I'm also very interested in the paranormal and supernatural, and like to hear what people have to say.

But i know what you mean. When people just say there is no such thing, without giving an explanation for their reasoning besides their lack of an open mind.

I personally believe in the paranormal so I'm pretty sure if they ever had a paranormal experience that they honestly could not explain or recreate they would be a little more open minded.

They probably read the question out of curiosity,

but when it appears to them that it's not based on

true science (as they understand it) they respond

in order to show off, make themselves feel superior,

or to try to "set someone straight".

Of course there's also the 2 points...

So, how is it that you know that all the "non-believers" have no "shred of knowledge in the areas of the sciences involved"? Are you psychic? I can't speak for everyone, but for me, I answer because I hope that I might give reason for some of these people here to think critically. That maybe, they'll search for a mundane explanation for some experience, that at first glance appears "paranormal".

I certainly do not answer for the points, they are worthless after all!

I never have a problem with beliefs, though mine tend to be based on reality instead of fantasy.

My problem is with those that claim the paranormal is factual with no evidence to back their claim. There are no theories that will pass testing. No one can answer any of the hows and whys it should exist. Anyone saying the paranormal is factual is simply lying. Does anyone want truth or are you happy with speculation? The evidence will always be able to speak the truth and the truth demands to be tested.

"It seems to me what is called for is an exquisite balance between two conflicting needs: the most skeptical scrutiny of all hypotheses that are served up to us and at the same time a great openness to new ideas … If you are only skeptical, then no new ideas make it through to you … On the other hand, if you are open to the point of gullibility and have not an ounce of skeptical sense in you, then you cannot distinguish the useful ideas from the worthless ones."
