is there away to report illegal backyard breeding in los angeles county?
I am sick of all of the illegal breeders out there and charging $350 - $500 for a dog! The law in los angeles states that it is illegal to breed dogs without a proper breeding permit.
How can I report people? Where do I report? Please help. It has to stop and I will make it a mission to stop all the backyard breeders if I just could figure out where to report.
I emailed la city and aspca. hopefully i will get a response and update this post.
To a few who are against the legislation, go visit a shelter today. Ask how many dogs are being put to sleep everyday because there are no more rooms. I am not saying that I am against breeding all together but if you want to breed and pay a license to do so, FINE. If you are doing it just to make money or you just forgot or decided not to "spay/neuter" your dog is IRRESPONSIBLE.
If you are in Los Angeles, call this 24 hour number. they will be able to tell you which 6 shelters you should call to report. Make sure you get the address and phone number.

First of all, you have no way of knowing that they do not have a permit unless you are confronting total strangers, which is foolish and dangerous. The permits are expensive ($200 a year), which may be why they are selling the dogs for such a high price. Not to mention, there is a $100 a year fee for keeping an intact animal, which is presumably multiplied by two since there has to be a male and female. After you calculate in the medical costs for raising a litter to the age of eights weeks, $350 for a puppy is a reasonable asking price.

That is a link to the breeding permit for Los Angeles- notice that nowhere does it say that the animals must be purebred.

How do you know these people don't have permits and are breeding "illegally". Have you been in their homes? Have you seen how the puppies are raised? L
Gee, I wonder how many of those dogs in Los Angeles shelters are there because of the BSL and mandatory spay/neuter. I wonder how many of those shelter dogs have been imported from Mexico, Puerto Rico, China, Korea etc.
If you want to help dogs, then visit your local shelter and donate your time, walk the shelter dogs, help train them, bring them old blankets etc. If your worried that the animals are being abused, then contact your local humane law enforcement agency...after all, there are laws in place to prevent abuse.
I will never support mandatory spay/neuter, mandatory microchipping etc. The government has no business legislating dog breeding or pet ownership. BTW, owning an unnuetered or unspayed dog does not automatically make one irresponsible.
edit: Yes, Annnie, I agree with you. I know of a excellent whippet breeder that will no longer place dogs in homes in California.

You know because of this stupid legislation against dog breeders, nobody will sell good dogs to anybody in LA county?
Do you know how much it costs to raise a litter -- thousands!
It's stupid, small minded legislation and those who supported it should know that they drove OUT the good breeders and people are importing puppy mill dogs from the midwest and overseas because they can no longer obtain responsibly bred really good purebreds.
Somebody should go to jail, but I'd vote that its the clueless people who supported this legislation to being with.

Call the local shelter. They should be able to help you stop the breeding. Kudos for standing up against BYBing. We're far and few in between.
