Average Salary for a High school French teacher?

I am American and my husband is French, we live in France. After our kids are older and I have my French citizenship, we would like to move back to the States and my husband is interested in teaching French. I know the pay changes yearly, but can anyone give me a ballpark figure?

Update:

* he will become a certified teacher via University of Phoenix if he does decide to do this*

Each state has different pay scales, and you will normally make less money if you work at a parochial or private school, than a public school. Public schools normally have more turn-over, so they offer better salaries and benefits to keep good teachers.

I am giving you a "teacher salary" by states.

It doesn't matter what subject you teach, math, science, or language, most teachers are paid the same beginning salary, with raises based on years of service and what degree you have. (i.e, a Masters Degree, pays more than a BA degree).

Unfortunately, you also must meet state "certification" requirements, and take various education classes to get a permanent license. There are normally 12-15 hrs of courses in "history of education", psychology, school budgets, and "curriculum development".

Make sure your husband takes the exact courses that the state requires, again, each state is different, and the University of Phoenix may not offer them, check ahead, always.

SO, first step is deciding what state you will choose to live in.

You probably know, that states that offer highest salaries, also have the highest cost of living. So, often it will make more sense to choose a place with a lower beginning salary if cost of housing and state taxes are lower, than going for a higher salary, and having to pay more for rent, utilities, transportation, and for state taxes.

Teaching isn't just knowing your subject (i.e, French) but also doing lesson plans, and getting along with all types of students, especially those with special needs.

Most starting salaries are in mid-30's or lower.

French teachers are not in high demand, today we need more Spanish teachers, and also Chinese language is much needed.

Remember, these salaries are for a school year of around 280 working days (with summer off).

    Good luck.
