It doesn't help our planet. Plastics shouldn't exist, it's because of petroleum and fossil fuels that these man made synthetic products do exist. Henry Ford said that all foosil fuels used around the world should have long ago been replaced with biodiesel such as hemp. Hemp plastics would break down naturally in nature and are edible so if you bought a candy you can throw the wrapper and not have to worry about polluting the earth.

It reduces the destruction of natural resources while keeping displaced or expired materials from damaging the earth. Recycling enables spent resources to find new purpose and become usable once again.

Recycled paper, cardboard, wood and rubber products can be refined into new products like boxes, cards, newspaper, books, furniture, and mulch. More hazardous waste (batteries) can be disassembled carefully and be reused for the creation of more batteries. Metals can be melted down into new molds. The list goes on and on...

The less waste the less crap sitting in land fills waiting to rot away. Some of the waste creeps down into the water table which is a very bad thing. Waste is bad. Keep in green.
