Is homosexuality a mental disorder? Reasoning supplied. This a serious question.?

So my question, is homosexuality a mental disorder? My reasoning behind this is that people who might be sexually attracted to children, animals, or anything other then a normal heterosexual relationship, besides homosexuality, is often classified as a mental disorder.

It is my understanding that people do not choose what they are attracted to. If someone is sexually attracted to children, that was never their choice. The same goes for someone who is sexually attracted to the same sex. That is also not their choice. Many people attracted to children are also very ashamed of it, in the same way that many homosexuals may be.

Now, do not read this wrong, I am not supporting pedophilia or anything of the sort. I am merely stating that both the attraction to children, the same sex, animals, or whatever else it may be, is completely NOT the persons choice. The person does not choose what their sexual preference might be. It will always be like that.

So, why is homosexuality NOT considered a mental disorder when being attracted to children, animals, etc. IS considered a mental disorder?

They are the exact same thing, an attraction to something OTHER then the opposite sex. They are ALL something the person does not choose. I agree totally that homosexuals do not choose to be attracted to males, just as I agree that pedophiles do not choose to be attracted to children.

So why, according to this reasoning, would homosexuality NOT be considered a mental disorder? You cant have it both ways. They are basically picking and choosing what is a mental disorder based on what is socially acceptable, instead of judging by how the brain should function.

As I said before, this is a very serious question and I mean nothing bad towards your sexual preference, homosexual or not. I am just curious as to why this is the way it is. Thanks for your time and patience. I hope to hear some good responses either validating, or intellectually opposing my view.

Update:

Also I wanted to clarify that I am NOT talking about people acting on these sexual attractions. I am only curious about the attraction itself.

For example, someone could be attracted to children, yet never in their life act on it because they know it is wrong. Same with someone being attracted to males, yet never act on it because they know it is wrong (depending on how they were raised) or they are shameful of it.

I am only interested in the fact that they cannot choose what they are attracted to. So why are some considered mental disorders and others not, when they are clearly similar.

Homosexuality was included in earlier versions of the DSM but later removed. Some believe for two reasons: 1. political pressure. 2. The APA believed there was insufficient evidence that homosexuality negatively impacted the person. However, your exact example is currently under debate for DSM-V. Is it abnormal if it doesn't bother the patient? Perhaps the only way this can be solved is admitting that regardless of how objective and independent the APA wants to be, we cannot completely separate ourselves from some standard of morality.

A mental disorder can only be classified that if it disrupts daily functioning. The only reason pedophilia and bestiality and etc are classified as mental disorders is because they go against our society's morals and perception of what is good and bad. They aren't actual illnesses or disorders(even though liking children and animals sexually is gross) even though they are labeled as such. Homosexuality is more commonly excepted anymore and has been taken off the list of mental disorders, as it used to be considered one. AND the only reason theses things are highly looked down upon is because of the widespread of christianity in most areas and, if you're on the more skeptical side, whos actually the sick ones? Religion in my opinion is a delusion. Delusions are not healthy. I do think religion has done a lot of good in instilling values and morals and giving people hope and something to believe in, but people let it take over their lives. BUT that is a whole other story and I got a little carried away. But there ya go!

You seem to be conflating mental disorder with criminal activity. They are not the same. Mental disorders are not crimes. Sociopathy, for example, is a mental disorder. Sociopaths are not locked up for being sociopaths. Sociopaths are only prosecuted if they commit a crime. Homosexuality used to be a crime in many countries, including England and the USA, and it remains a crime in many countries right now. It was/is a crime because people think it is immoral. Believe it or not, cross-dressing was once considered immoral, and there are laws in the books prohibiting that act. Some of those laws are still in the books in some municipalities, although they have not been enforced for decades. In fact, since pants were once considered men's clothing, women who wear pants can potentially be arrested and charged with the crime of cross-dressing using these outdated by still valid laws.

Moral values have changed greatly in many countries over the past century, and homosexuality has been decriminalized in many countries, including England and the United States. Therefore, homosexuals are not jailed in many countries. However, in other countries, moral values have not changed for centuries, therefore homosexuals may be jailed, and even executed for their crime in some countries because it remains a criminal act in those countries. In most countries around the world, sex with children is a crime. Whether it is a mental disorder or not is irrelevant. Most people would probably agree that jaywalking is not a mental disorder, but it is a crime, and it is also punishable by law. Hence it is unimportant whether a behavior is considered a mental disorder or not. If it is considered harmful and/or immoral by the lawmakers, then any behavior can be criminalized.

Given the population numbers at the moment i doubt if the majority would view it as a mental/emosional disorder.

You could argue that some are mentally deranged and sexually messed up, but there are others who's X/Y chromosones are messed up, as a result of which they don't have much choice in the matter.

You could argue those who's X/Y chromosones are not messed up are a bit deranged.

An "XX" pair of chromosomes will yield a female; an "XY" pair will result in a male. The "X" is always contributed from the mother (since she has only "X's"), but the father can contribute either an "X" or a "Y"-- so it is the father's genetic contribution that determines the gender of the child. Homosexual men have "XY" pairs which are typically male in all respects.

If all homosexual men have the same chromosomes as heterosexual males, what makes their hypothalamus different? This inquiry received no definitive commitment from my learned friend at Harvard, but he did refer me to some studies where I could find the answer.

People are born gay. Being attracted to children and/or animals is harmful to that creature and that is why it is rightfully considered a mental disorder. But homosexuality isn't harmful to anyone because it's just consenual relations between two adults. Hasn't it been found that the level of testorone in gay men is lower than in straight men? And that lesbians have less oestrogen than straight women (and bit more testorone). (hormonal theory). Theres also homosexual animals in other species too, although that is usually hushed up. I also would question whether a hetrosexual relationship is the only "normal" relationship as you put it-Kinsey did research which indicated that sexuality isn't a black or white matter. Basically he had a scale from 0-6, going from hetrosexual to bisexual to gay.

Homosexuality is found in more species than just man. Therefor, I would classify it as a common mutation, much more akin to left-handedness than a disorder such as schizophrenia.

What genetic benefit it may be I have no idea, but homosexuals don't prey upon children any more than heterosexuals do. Since they comprise a much smaller proportion of the general population than "straights" the real number of pedophilia cases attributable to homosexuals is very small.

I would say it depends. Who is to say people who love animals or animals in a sexual way are mentally unstable? If many many people were sexually attracted ti animals, it would be normal. I would say none of them are a mental disorder, they're just not socially accepted.

P.s. I am not attracted to animals or children, I like girls and guys. Lol

    I doubt it.

Too many intelligent people are gay. Like Alexander the Great ... he did a lot. Even people like Elton John, I just don't think it's a mental disorder.

I guess it can be ... but not in every single situation.

There are psychiatrists and psychologists that want to remove pedophilia from the DSM and their reasoning is that even if it is an immoral act it does not make it an illness.
