Is getting into FIDM hard to do?

It is very competitive, and though they do look mostly at your talent and drive for design, your grades are important. I would say a smart thing to do (this is what my admissions counselor at FIDM recommended) is to ask for as much information as possible, express an interest, even send your portfolio, but go to community college for a year. Do as well as possible, and make sure your credits will transfer, then apply as a transfer student. It's easier to get in when you have college experience, and it's cheaper in the long run. EDIT: It also depends on what campus you apply to. Obviously, the LA campus gets more applicants than the Orange County or the San Francisco one. Personally, I'm applying to all three. Not only does that show that you are very serious about attending the school, but the two other schools serve as sort of back ups. You have a better chance of getting in if you apply to all three.
