VA Hospital infects 1500 people with AIDS, is this how Government run Health Care is going to be?

http://www.cnn.com/2010/US/06/30/va.hospital.hiv/i... (CNN) -- A Missouri VA hospital is under fire because it may have exposed more than 1,800 veterans to life-threatening diseases such as hepatitis and HIV.

John Cochran VA Medical Center in St. Louis has recently mailed letters to 1,812 veterans telling them they could contract hepatitis B, hepatitis C and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) after visiting the medical center for dental work, said Rep. Russ Carnahan.

Carnahan said Tuesday he is calling for a investigation into the issue and has sent a letter to President Obama about it.

"This is absolutely unacceptable," said Carnahan, a Democrat from Missouri. "No veteran who has served and risked their life for this great nation should have to worry about their personal safety when receiving much needed healthcare services from a Veterans Administration hospital."

The issue stems from a failure to clean dental instruments properly, the hospital told CNN affiliate KSDK.

KSDK: VA dental patients at risk of infection

Dr. Gina Michael, the association chief of staff at the hospital, told the affiliate that some dental technicians broke protocol by handwashing tools before putting them in cleaning machines.

The instruments were supposed to only be put in the cleaning machines, Michael said.

The handwashing started in February 2009 and went on until March of this year, the hospital told KSDK.

The hospital has set up a special clinic and education centers to help patients who may have been infected. However, Carnahan said he feels more should be done and those responsible should be disciplined.

"I can only imagine the horror and anger our veterans must be feeling after receiving this letter," Carnahan said. "They have every right to be angry. So am I."

This is not the first time this year a hospital has been in hot water for not following proper procedures.

In June, Palomar Hospital in San Diego, California, has sent certified letters to 3,400 patients who underwent colonoscopy and other similar procedures, informing the patients that there may be a potential of infection from items used and reused in the procedures

Update:

gitrdone have you ever been to a VA hospital? I have when I got out of the Military the place is dirty and old, and the quality care sucks

There is not one proven case of AIDS anywhere mentioned in this article.

It is true that there is a potential for infection and that is unacceptable. But it is also unacceptable for you to exaggerate the information to make a political point.

1500 people were not infected with aids! Your own link doesn't say that. Also it is good that in the US no one is pushing for Government run health care, the recently passed reforms were insurance reforms not government control of Hospital Operations.

That has been the problem with you conservatives...1) government is not taking over health care, 2) you lied..I mean exaggerated the information from this article. How can people have an Intelligent discussion on complex issues if one side is constantly misstating the facts.

Well, to be sure, in the article you cited, the Palomar Hospital referenced for possible infections from colonoscopy procedures is not a government or VA hospital.

So this isn't a problem with just government run hospitals.

Aside: I do wish reporters had more curiousity, because I'm kind of gobsmacked at how handwashing dentals tools prior to putting them into cleaning machines somehow is worse than just putting them into cleaning machines without any prior cleaning. Isn't anybody else curious about that?

1,800 Patients May Have Been Exposed to HIV, Hepatitis at Florida Hospital

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — More than 1,800 patients treated by one nurse at a South Florida hospital may have been exposed to HIV and hepatitis.

Broward General Medical Center said Monday the nurse reused saline bags and tubing during cardiac stress tests involving the injection of fluids. The hospital has sent letters to all 1,851 people who may've been affected from January 2004 to early September.

Hospital officials say the risk of exposure is low, but all affected patients should be tested for HIV and hepatitis B and C.

(is this how civilian run Health Care is going to be?)

Yes, I think it is. I am in the Army and I see the government run hospitals all the time. They ration care, are limited by some big Army planner on how many specialist and such they can hire. You can't sure for malpractice or anything else for than matter. Yes I see government run health care being just as bad if not worse since the Army military health system can't even support about 3 million total people, I really doubt we can even get it to be that good ( and trust me, it's not good. Maybe ok at best) for 300+ million people.

The healthcare reform bill is intended to give affordable health care to everyone through a mandatory health insurance scheme. This bill was not proposing making changes to the way hospitals do their business. In any hospital, there are always risks and even if the health reform bill had not been put forward, this incident would still have happened. Who would you be blaming then? Do try to see the bigger picture and not a narrow mindset like the rest of the right wing brigade who simply want to rubbish anything Obama tries to do.

No, it's going to be a whole lot worse. Imagine having to fill out piles of paperwork while doubled over in pain or spasms. Oops, not sick enough you will have to wait two weeks before being seen again. Buh-bye. And if you are sick enough, still sucks to be you. Your eye disease or heart problem has a three month wait. And then an additional three week wait until the surgery can be performed-- if the Obamacare lawyers deem you worthy enough to have it.

VA hospitals are notorious for having Affirmative Action third rate Third World doctors operate on patients. Often these barbarians leave surgical instruments, sponges, towels, and other debris inside a patient, and the patient has no legal recourse.

  • Don't you dare speak ill of the Messiah's plan for government run healthcare!! I demand you stop now. Don't go mentioning things like this or the goverment run mail system is having to consider cost cutting actions (such as scaling back services). You making my hero, Obama, savior of this nation look bad!!!

The "health care reform bill" is about money ($849 billion) and the insurance companies (who now have the government forcing people to buy insurance). Any effect on the quality of health care will be coincidental.

A more important number is the patients who contracted AIDS/ hep. during this period after visiting this hospital.

Healthcare bill will die before it is in place and ruins business and the American way
