Legality of a wood bumper on a retro 1968 camper surf van in California?

We are rebuilding a 1968 British camper van that was used by a surf crew for 42 years-obviously down to the metal and back up. One of the ideas was to make thick wood bumpers like they used to put on the VW vans years age. They would certainly be stronger than the rusted skinny originals we bought it with and would be backed with steel but I was wondering if they would be legal in my state?

That may have been legal (or at least not penalized) back then, but the safety and equipment laws have evolved over the years, and using a 4 x 12 (or six 2x4's laminated together) may not be legal today.

I would call the local District Attorney's office, and ask them. While they primarily deal with criminal law, they should still be able to assist you with your inquiry (which shouldn't necessitate any exhaustive research).

Im certain it would be legal, as ive seen wooden bumpers before on classic vehichles. Heck, i saw a roadster truck in california that had bowling pins, one on each other and the guy had no problem insuring it like that.
