iPod battery will hold a charge but will not charge?

So the title basically tells the problem a few days ago my iPod stopped charging, but it still had some charge left on the battery so I can use it (plus I have a portable usb battery that I have been using) but this makes me question if the problem is the battery since it still seems capable of retaining a charge.

Should I just wander to the apple store and ask them or should I just spend the ten dollars and buy a new battery and hope for the best?

Update:

I have used 3 different computers, 2 different wall chargers, 2 different usb cables. It is something to do with the ipod and it is not a charging time issue.

I would try to plug it in more, like if mine isn't plugged in all the way it won't charge. There might be a connection shortage, in that case you would have to get it repaired if you still have a warranty. If this doesn't help, then yes you should call Apple and might have to buy a new battery.
