The transmission has to be checked and filled from underneath. The engine has to be warmed up to operating temperature, then WHILE RUNNING IN PARK put a pan underneath and remove the LARGE fill plug on the bottom while holding the SMALL plug from turning. If fluid pours out wait until the fluid is only a thin stream or a drip. If no fluid comes out or very little does, shut the engine off and suck up some Mercon-V with a suction gun, squirt it up the fill tube and check again the same way as earlier.

These ones are a PAIN for D-I-Yer's

I am assuming it is necessary to change the fluid to check the transmission, (at least for 65 bucks I hope the dealer is going to do a filter a pan gasket and a fluid change. you sure do have a point, but it is what it is Honestly, the only way I can think of to check your fluid in the future, is to put an aftermarket oil plug kit in the transmission pan when you take it off to service it (maybe you will have one already? you would then have to drain the fluid, measure it, and put it back in, or add new fluid (better idea) the good news is a transmission leak on new vehicles is rare, if you suddenly develope a big leak, the wind will blow fluid all over the sides and back of the vehicle, leaving a pink hard to miss greasy mess. IN fact if I owned it, I would find out exactly how much fluid to add when pan is empty, dump the fluid with my drain plug, recycle it, and just add fresh fluid every 5 thousand miles or so. thats my better idea, whats yours?

Most late model cars are made this way. The car makers did this on purpose because too many people were adding the wrong fluids, burning up the transmissions, and blaming the manufacturer. There are two ports on the side of the transmission--a fill port and drain port. Some have only one port. If you don't have a way to get under to check it yourself, you'll have to pay a shop.
