Are treadmill calorie counters accurate?

I have been walking on my tread mill at a 12% incline at 3mph for 2 hours daily and the treadmill says that I'm burning 1500 calories every time I do this. I was wondering if this is accurate and will help me lose weight quickly.

I'm currently 200 lbs and would like to lose about 20lbs.

They aren't really that accurate. They are simply calculating the results of a mathematical equation that uses your age, weight, speed, and incline. Unfortunately, this doesn't help determine accurately how many calories you burn. A person who it 5'10, weighing 220lbs, with 35% body fat is going to burn a significantly different number of calories than an NFL linebacker who is 5'10, weighing 220lbs, with 7% body fat.

Now, if you want to burn fat, you need to do two things on your treadmill. 1) Increase the speed 2) Shorten the length of time. Instead of walking for 2 hours at 3mph, try running for 30 minutes at 8mph. If you can't do that long right now, try running at that speed for 2 or 3 minutes, then walking for 2 or 3 minutes. Keep alternating back and forth for 30-45 minutes. After a few day, increase how long you run, and shorten how long you walk. You'll get much more fat burning benefit by running for less time than you will by walking for a long time.
