The best way to get to sleep is not to try and get to sleep. If you sit in the dark anticipating sleep to come, you'll just toss and turn for hours. The ways i tend to fall asleep if im having trouble are;
Eat something - you'll feel more drowsy on a full stomach
Get a hot drink - relaxes so even more drowsy
Turn the lights out but put a film on or use the computer - the dark around a bright screen will strain your eyes, making you want to close them
I recommend putting a film on and doing all of the above, as it is long and time consuming and you could get absorbed in it and forget that you're excited. The longer you stay up, the more tired you will get.

Most of the time:/ I hated my old school though. I got bullied really badly there for years and I absolutely hated being there. I also hated a lot of the subjects that I studied and I was constantly under a huge amount of pressure to perform well. All of this stress often made it difficult for me to sleep the night before school started again, particularly as I wasn't generally that tired after sleeping in until late that day. Now I go to a new school that I really like, and had very little anxiety about going back after half term. The reason that I couldn't sleep was because I had a cup of pretty strong tea about two and a half hours before bed and I'm extremely caffeine intolerant so that seriously kept me awake.:| Maddy x

Don't ever take the sleeping pills route!!
1. They will damage your liver big time and you can get into serious health problems.
2. You will get hooked up on them and you won't be able to have a normal life any more if you don't take your pills everyday.
The sleeping pills industry is damaging our health by capitalizing on our ignorance, and by distracting people from effective and natural ways to deal with this problem. I had been taking prescription sleep medications [Ambien] for over 5 years. It stopped working and I simply took more. Still did not work. Nights were very difficult - medication put me to sleep but I would wake up after 2–3 hours with a strong sympathetic response (fast pulse, pounding heartbeat, wide awake alert). It was a very difficult cycle to break. I was really in bad shape due to lack of sleep.
After years of struggling I was able to cure my insomnia naturally and pretty fast. I followed the Sleep Tracks sleep optimization program, here is their official web -site if you want to take a look: http://www.insomniacure.net/
