Why do people pronounce betta this way?

Why do people pronounce betta like bay-tah? Where did this come from, and why do some many people say it this way? Almost everyone I've met pronounces it this way. I've just always wondered where this pronunciation came from.

Update:

Nope. It's definintely pronounced bet-tah. Unless us hobbiest are wrong.

Probably because of it's similarity to the more common word "beta" - a single "t" is the difference between the two. A lot of people don't know the real pronunciation and continue to say it that way, so it spreads around.

  • It's what people call them to their kids or friends because that's how they learned. Most people wouldn't bother looking up the proper definition (except you). But yes, I do agree with you, it is pronounced Bet-tah.
