Connecting two computers?

Hello.

I have two laptops in my home. They have Win7. I want to connect them with cable but after plugging in, Network and Sharing Center says that the network is unidentified. In fact, when I run troubleshoot, the problem is detected as "Local Area Connection doesn't have a valid IP". I already turned on file sharing. Please Help me.

Thanks.NTY3

Are you using a router or lan hub between the 2 computers or have they been directly connected together?

If you want to use just one cable, you will need a 'cross over' cable.

You can buy dongles that plug into 1 of the computers before the cable which effectevly switches it to a crossover cable.

two laptops without a switch or a hub needs to be connected with a cross-over ethernet cable...then you give it static IPs

    condifgure ipv4 tcp/ip settings with

    laptop 1

    ip: 192.168.1.1

    subnetmask: 255.255.255.0

    laptop 2

    ip: 192.168.1.2

    subnetmask: 255.255.255.0

remember to remove these settings when yur done or else u cant connect elsewhere later. ultimately i would use a switch/hub instead of a cross-over cable.
