Air Force DEP Job Question?
It is to my understanding that when you sign your DEP at MEPS they tell you to list a number of jobs and then one aptitude area. Everyone I have spoken too seems to end up shipping on open general and being SF. Are they simply screwing themselves by agreeing to it (in their DEP contract) at MEPS, or are they being shipped on open contracts because there were no jobs available? I'm very interested in joining the AF and did reasonably well on the ASVAB (96), and would really like to have some (if even just a little) idea of what I'm getting into.
Thanks for the help.
p.s. These are some AFSCs that I'm interested in
3D0X3
2M0X1A
2A3X1
2A3X2
2A0X1
2E4X1
2M0X3
1C6X1
1C1X1
2A4X2?
3D0X3
Any one know which of these are in demand?
Thanks, recruiters don't tell you you can wait, they want you to sign for what they need. I'm definitely not interested in those jobs, but luckily I've got time to wait.

You don't have to sign for a job at MEPS. Open contract is really geared for people who need to ship ASAP regardless of job due to financial circumstances or what have you. However, its also an easy way for them to fill jobs that are undermanned (yes, Open General gives you about 80% chance of going Security Forces).
I don't know most of the AFSC's off the top of my head, but I'll list some I know they are looking for (high deployment rates, high demand).
Security Forces
Spec Ops (PJ, CCT, TACP, Weather)
Aerial Transportation
EOD
Some maintenance jobs
If you have a specific job set in mind, wait in DEP if you can. Your job will open eventually.

The bottom line is finding a job (AFSC) that you will enjoy doing for at least four years (minimum Active Duty enlistment contract length) / Some people enlist under open Aptitude Areas (usually the highest scored area) then select an AFSC that's in that specific area down at BMT. Others try an get a specific AFSC (guaranteed job) at MEPS based on their ASVAB scores - enlist into the DEP then wait for a Ship Out Date to BMT / A percentage of AFSC's are initally sent out to the MEPS to be potentially filled while the remaining amount are filled down at BMT under the open Aptitude Areas - which ones are needed more than others - unknown
