How Would You React, Baptists?

Some background: I am Wiccan, hubs is Christian, and we have 3 children whom are free to explore religion as they please. My only rules are they don't kill anyone or come home condemning any family members to hell or any other sort of "bad place".

Now, my middle daughter wanted to go to vacation bible school after she received an invite from a friend. This particular church is at the end of our street. We have used their daycare services in the past (excellent ladies, took real good care of our kids and taught them well). On one occasion a few years ago some people came "witnessing" to our home where I politely informed them that "no, I don't want to have a close relationship with Jesus" and that I had "found my own spiritual home". So it was no secret amongst the members of this church who I was and what I am. Ok so after this particular VBS there was a family night. My middle daughter really wanted to go and so we went together as a family. In the course of the night several gentleman seemed to be bothered my presence. They never said anything but they stared an awful lot. I actually thought I had something on my shirt and even checked my zipper. My hubs got upset because he felt it was just rude. He thought that if they felt a need to stare they could have came and talked to me. Lots of other people came and talked to us, many of which know I am Wiccan. Those people didn't treat me any differently. So my question is, how would you react?

Since not just Baptists would answer this, everyone else: Have you been to a church service where people have stared?

Update:

Seeker, the three gentlemen were the same ones who had visited my home. We have seen them around town and they often talked to my husband whom confided that they were telling him he had to save me. So I am 99% sure it was because of who I am. Of course I could be completely wrong and I would happily admit I am wrong if it turns out that way.

Update 2:

rev Doc Holladay that is exactly what I thought. Perhaps even moreso because I am not a beleiver, ya know?

All should be welcome into Gods house without prejudice or being critical of anyones belief- They should be following Jesus example - acceptance of every one just as they are. That is one of the things that Jesus chewed the Pharisee out for- they thought they were better than every one else.

One time I went back to the church I grew up in- No on spoke even spoke to me- even though they had been to church camps and all through school with me- grade school - high school - Very cold church- I think in part because when I left that church I let them know many of the reasons why and when I went back- several of my suscpicons were confirmed- they were not concerned about people - that church had turned into a club and if you disagreed with anything- you were out cast. They were cold and had no spirit. No vibrance at all!

the salvation plan of Jesus has so much more to do with life then not killing someone or cursing a person .when God touches a heart one realizes that we are ALL broken and we would do better not to criticize anyone And just because you belong to a church does not mean your saved either.if that were the case wed ALL be saved. Most of the population runs to their church at least once a week.and most people remain the next 10 20 30 years just the same as the first day they walked in .there sure as long as there in church their gone to heaven.and if thats the worst thing that someone does to you in this life then consider yourself most fortunate!

Unfortunately too many Christians are too concerned about another's spiritual walk and not in their own. It's usually the older men who don't know what grace is supposed to look like and instead give out judgments, the Baptist faith tradition tends to be more about the law and not about the freedom there is in Christ.

Love and grace should be the number one concern for Christians who want to make a genuine difference in someone's life (and not to "convert" them). I'm afraid I'd not be as nice about it as you are. Sigh.

  • yeah people stare a lot when i go into churches, although it might be the random metal band shirts... but they all look at me as if im running around on fire with my head cut off... but that is human nature, we tend to group together and fear those who are different than us...

well people have to look some where

are you sure they were staring because they knew you were wiccan?

were they staring because you were new and they had not seen you before?

since they did not say anything are you just assuming it was because you are wiccan?

it would not bother me if people stared.

people have to look some where when they are awake and their eyes are open.
