Can a baby sleep while nursing?

My baby is 4 months. She nurses for like an hour with her eyes closed. Is she asleep?

Yes, they can! If she is still swallowing, then she is still getting milk while sleeping. There is nothing wrong with this. I find this sleepy nursing to be very peaceful and relaxing for me, too.

If she is only sucking very gently and not swallowing, then it might just be comfort nursing, and she's not getting any more milk. There is nothing wrong with this either. If she needs extra sucking to help her sleep, getting it at your breast is better for her mouth & jaw development than having a pacifier. However, if you need to get something done you could try gently removing her. If she wakes up and still wants to nurse, then latch her back on and let her finish.

    Baby Sleeping While Nursing

  • 1 decade ago

Probably... Babies can eat with in their sleep. Many mother's do it on purpose and call it 'dream feeding'... When my son was a newborn, I did dreamfeeding... basically, it's feeding the baby while they're asleep to 'top them off' right before you go to bed yourself so that the baby won't wake up an hour later.

My son would eat and go to bed at 8 and then wake up at 1am for another feeding but I didn't go to bed until midnight usually so I would just feed him while he was asleep at midnight and he wouldn't wake up at 1, but he'd stay asleep until 4.

  • My 8 1/2 mo daughter always breastfeeds to sleep pretty much (now that I'm living away) normally we wouldn't let this happen, but right now have no other option. They can also be using the breast for comfort/self soothing mechanism.

My 5 month old does it every night! For his 2am feeding, we're both only awake for about 3 minutes.

As long as she is showing weight gain and you can feel her still nursing she should be fine.
