Why do people not like hockey?

It's way more action-packed and fast-moving than the other three major professional sports. Is it because it's hard to understand? Is it because it's hard to skate? Is it because it's predominantly white? Is it because of the NHL's marketing? Thoughts?

people that don't like a sport , don't understand the rules

to me the rules in basketball and football are too complicated

hockey is easy to understand and i even explain the rules to other fans

    when at youth hockey games

many parents don't quite get it until it's explained simply

they didn't watch hockey until the kids wanted to join a team

90% of the games i watch are youth games the rest is pros on tv

It starts with parents not wanting their kids to play hockey at a young age because of the dangers and then goes to the price of playing hockey. It is a lot easier to get a basketball and go to a public court or get a football and play a pickup game than wait for the right climate, get all your gear and play a hockey game or rent ice on a rink. A lot of people don't want their kids to play hockey because of the danger and the price of it therefore there aren't as many hockey fans.

The overly small ice-surface of NHL rinks is the biggest problem. The NHL stupidly did not enlarge the ice surface to international dimensions when the arenas were replaced in the 80s-00s. Now they have much larger players and one extra ref crammed together, which greatly impedes the flow of the game. It allows less skilled, plodding, inferior players to compete with the more skilled, leading to low-scoring, tedious games. The international-size surfaces lead to a much faster, more explosive, exciting game, with more emphasis on speed, finesse and skill, and less emphasis on impeding, obstructing and fighting, which dominate the NHL game today.

The second major problem if fighting, which the dinosaurs which run the NHL see as integral to the game, even though it makes the League a mockery in the eyes of sports fans around the world, who see it as little better than pro-wrestling.

Today's NHL game is boring to watch in person or on TV. The powers to be have taken an intrinsically exciting, fast-moving, skillful game and deadened it with their archaic, unimaginative thinking.

I have no idea! Hockey is so amazingly simple to understand! And, if you are mad but can't deck the person you're mad at, you watch two players smack each other around and poof all better. The violence and pace is amazing.

I dont know why... I love hockey! Better than watching guys get on top of each other and wrestle for a ball or a bunch of people kicking a ball around

i like hockey. always have. still do. Maybe you are confusing "hockey" (or ice hockey) with the NHL.

midget bettman's crappy product called "NHL" is definitely NOT hockey. it's not the hockey that has always been played, that i remember, or that i like.

right now, junior hockey in canada, college hockey in US and olympics/worlds are much closer to true hockey.

midget can take his version and cram it.
