Is PETA actually counter-productive against fighting animal cruelty?
I, myself, am an animal lover. I donate money to Defenders of Wildlife and other causes that help imperaled species; give towels and food to animal rescue shelters; contact my Representatives on vital environmental issues; and have even gone so far as to direct traffic around rattlesnakes basking in the sun on the road. However, a question I get constantly is "Ick, are you a member of PETA?"
It seems PETA, with all their protesting, outrageous demands, nude demonstrations, burning down of McDonalds and sabotaging dog shows has done the exact OPPOSITE of their goal to end animal insensitivity. I feel, because of PETA, people lump all individuals advocating animal justice into one ugly mass of crazy animal-nuts, making progress for the fight against animal suffering next to impossible. People go even so far as to spite PETA (like the famous web picture of two hunters arranging shot rabbit corpses to say "F*** PETA".
I mean, I of course agree with PETA that you shouldn't club seals or fight dogs, but burning down a resturaunt because it serves animal products (I even enjoy a nice fillet of sol every once in awhile) is a little extreme, if not completely counter-productive. What do you think?

The more I learn about PETA, the less I think of them. According to PETA's own filings, in 2004 PETA killed 86.3 percent of the animals entrusted to its care -- a number that's rising, not falling. Meanwhile, the SPCA in PETA's home town (Norfolk, Va.) was able to find loving homes for 73 percent of the animals put in its care. A shortage of funds? Nope: last year PETA took in $29 million in tax-exempt donations. It simply has other priorities for the funds, like funding terrorism (yes, really). But don't take my word for it: I got my figures from http://www.petakillsanimals.com/ -- and they have copies of PETA's state and federal filings to back it up. The bottom line: if you donate money to PETA because you think they care for and about animals, you need to think some more. PETA literally yells and screams about how others "kill animals" but this is how they operate? Pathetic.

I agree with you. Believe me, I cry my *** off when I see those ASPCA commercials with all the hurt animals, but PETA only serves to disgust me. Other organizations get together to help animals in need and do what they can legally to prevent it from happening again. Of course it doesn't work as well as everyone would like it to, but it is the right way to go about doing things. PETA on the other hand is just ridiculous and at times offensive. They aren't more pro-animal rights because they deny their natural inclination to eat meat and they aren't special because they go around f*cking over people who don't agree with them. They are like a spoiled child. No to mention all the hypocrisy. The goddamn vice president speaks out against animal testing and then goes and takes her synthetic insulin twice a day. And then she has the balls to say she is allowed to take advantage of the incredible medical advancements we have available due to animal testing because she "needs [her] life to fight for the rights of animals."
PETA started out with a good message, now they're just retarded hypocrites who target violent imagery at children.

U can go 2 PETA.ORG & enter VICTORIES in the search window 2 c what they have accomplished over the years... PETA believes in going directly 2 the ppl & rally their supporter via their "action alerts" & newsletters to e-mail companies that abuse animals or profit from the abuse of animals.
ppl who don't like PETA r usually meat-eaters who don't care about the suffering that animals go thru on WWW.FACTORYFARMING.COM... They c nothing wrong with experimenting on helpless animals (www.stopanimaltests.com)... or they like to wear fur (www.furisdead.com)... or they like to go to circuses (www.circuses.com) or rodeos (www.rodeocruelty.com).
Vegetarians & animal lovers who don't like PETA r actually ignoring the message b/c they don't like the messenger.... PETA sez they can't do enough or go far enough 2 end animal abuse.
Many PETA-haters like 2 ref that petakillsanimals website, which is sponsored by the meat industry (www.consumerdeception.com)... PETA admits they euthanize ppl's unwanted pets b/c there is no room to house them all... If any1 of these ppl can think of what 2 do w/the 5-mil animals that go unadopted every yr, I'm sure that PETA, HSUS & ASPCA would like 2 hear from them.
And as 4 those 2 hunters w/their arrangement of dead rabbits... here they are after they got home...

i think peta wastes their time on poitless petitions and protests.
shampoo and makeup companies will always test on animals. so what if cows die. thats what they are for.
instead of wasting theyr time and annoying the general hamburger loving public, they could be using the time they all put in as volunteers to give dogs and cats homes or to work at shelters or something.
the government has already approved the MOST humane way to slaughter animals for food. they need not waste their time with that anymore. and it was documented that a few of the "animal cruelty" videos that peta had made wernt even filmed in america. it was 3rd world countries. and so im wondering why they spend so much money trying to save ducks and cows and chickens somewhere in asia or the middle east when we have things that need to be done in our own country. like al the ferral dogs and cats in the US.
the peta people have taken the cause way to far. i think they all just want the attention. i mean, to fake a video of animal cruelty, telling people that it was happening in america is pretty low. thats just pitiful.
i think americans of all race, denomination, color, and age, whether they like animals or they like eating them, needs to start worrying more about our own country. our country is currently in the shitter, and burning down an american owned building on US soil is terrorism, despite what people may say. IT IS TERRORISM! there is no need for that.
but outside of peta i think all non profit agencies need to worry more about america instead of other places. i mean how many churches in america go to mexico every year to build houses? i think instead of doing that they should stay here, and build houses for the homeless. i mean how many war veterans come home to nothing?! they come home have little money and no insurance. why dont we help them before we help the mexicans? why doesnt peta worry more about ferral animals. i think the life of a ferral dog would be alot worse than being a farm cow. instead of people sending millions of dollars to haiti why dont they send that to new orleans. there is STILL HOMELESS PEOPLE THERE from katrina!!! (ya haiti was sad. but people, GET OVER IT!)
im a realist, and in my opinion. america, needs to help america. not everywhere else in the world.
that went a little off topic but its all relevant information.
