CLOTHES DRYER TOO HOT?

Hi and thanks for your answers in advance.

I hope someone could answer this as I can't find anyone that can come up with a logical answer.

My clothes dryer was not running and I went to put something on top of it for a minute until I could put it away. Anyhow, I touched it and it was scalding hot to the touch. I opened the door and the whole inside was as hot as an open flame.

I immediately unplugged it ( it is electric ) It cooled after I did this. Is there any explanation for what happened. Please keep in mind it was not on at all and was not used that day.No, it was not in the sun either.

Thanks much

Update:

I already got rid of it and have a new dryer. It was old anyway. I also did not want to take chances.

The heating element was probably on, but the fan wasn't, so the heat got concentrated in one area. (The switch shorted, probably.) Have it looked at by a repair person, before it burns your house down.

The asnwer above is very accurate and let me point out that these type of problems are among the top causes of house fires. Once the dryer gets this hot it ignites the lint trapped in the exhaust duct and there goes your house.
