What is it like being a Biologist?

Lately I've been trying to find out with what I want to do with my life. I realized that I always enjoyed science. My friend mentioned biology.

So far I'm looking at Geneticists, and Physiologists.

From first-hand experience, what is expected as a biologist? What different things can I do? What types of jobs would I do?

Here are some biology jobs, the names should tell you what they are.

    Biology

    Bioinformatics

    Biochemistry

    Biomedical Science

    Evolutionary Science

    Ecological Science

    Medicine

    Pharmacology

Any Medical Specialty (Histology, Neurology, etc)

    Bioengineering

    Botany

    Biophysics

    Psychiatry

    Ethology

    Astronomical Biology

    Biostatistics

Basically, it is a very diverse science, and a "biologist" has a lot to do, if they want to be a generalist. Look the above jobs up and see what interests you.

You can expect to be in school a loooong time. You should go up to calculus in high school, just so you can get into a good grad school. With a bachelors degree, there are much fewer openings, so look for a master's AT THE LEAST, and better yet, a doctorate's.

. Expect a lot of work and little pay if you want to just research (general biologist, bioinformatics, biostat. etomology, etc) , but you will feel good about what you do. Alternately, work for a hospital in biostat or bioengineering and make a modest living in a small apartment waiting for residency (same for any medical job)

Many people who first want to do biology realize the math is much more intense than expected, and instead go into another profession. Others who are decent at high math and biology including organic chem and biochem go into a medical profession including Biomed Scientist or on to med school. Others (mostly aspiring marine biologists) go all the way and realize that there just aren't many jobs available.

Wherever you go, good luck. Remember, keep studying and push through this difficult profession.

    First question: AMAZING.

You're expected to know your field and to enjoy your work.

At the University I go to there are over 25 five different Life Science courses, these are all Bio-something. If you go to the link in my sources and look at the modules, these are basically all the different types of biology you can do.

Jobs can range from teaching to doing research or even being a Doctor. With sciences your options are endless :)
