I'm 22 and own a house, can I be considered independent on FAFSA?

I just bought a house recently, and am trying to qualify for the pell grant. Is it possible to be considered independent since...well technically I am..

Being classified as dependent or independent has nothing to do with you owning a house. You can only be considered independent if you can answer YES to one of the 13 dependency status questions.

Just a note: if you recently qualified to buy a house (with an income high enough to buy one) you prob make too much money to qualify for a Pell grant. Just a guess though!!

The age question on the FAFSA is: were you born before Jan 1, 1987.

Technically speaking - you can be 24 and still answer 'NO' to this question, so you would still be considered 'dependent' for education purposes. People often seem to assume that the age is 24 and it is not.

Unfortunately for you, you still would be considered 'dependent' for education under Title IV funding.

You can only be independent in the following ways:

    1. 24 years old

    2. Married

    3. Have a child

    4. Going to grad school

    5. A ward of the state

    6. Veteran of the Armed Services.
