Why did the Pantera die?

I was looking through my dad's old pictures, and discovered he actually owned a Pantera. I have to say, I was impressed. If I'm not mistaken, Ford billed it as a cheaper, simpler alternative to expensive finicky supercars like a Ferrari. How did they go wrong? Why did these seemingly amazing cars die out so quickly?

Ford stopped importing them in 1974 with only 5,500 cars sold and a total of 7,500 in all. Ford did import a few as a gray market car ( no parts available for repairs through Ford).
