Atheists; Can you attain a higher level of consciousness,if so how,or do you just stay in the same frame of?

mind all your life?Thought this one up in the car earlier.Curious.

Update:

Ok;a measurement of a persons arousability and responsiveness to one's environment.Different levels are ,sleep,walking sleep,self awareness,objective consciousness,objective awareness,state of being.

Update 2:

EDIT to CAustiniV;So I guess the Dali Lama,Gandhi, the Shaman,Buddhist monks, are looking for lower levels of consciousness?I think not.People meditate, and try to get on a different plane,as a natural high,to release themselves from daily stresses,as an alternative of going for a joint,or a shot, or vicadin,Valium whatever.

Update 3:

EDIT to Scamp;O.K that's what I'm looking for that is close to what I think also. But so far I'm thinking no you can't,at l;east for this set,I will ask this better next time.

Atheists are usually realists who do not need drugs and other forms of "" higher level of consciousness "" to live day to day.

The only time I have out of body experiences is when I read some inane question on R&S.

I alternate between an alert state of consciousness and a mildly hallucinogenic state of unconsciousness on a 24-hour cycle at about a 3:1 ratio. So do you, and so does everyone who's not on the path to fatal insomnia or comatose.

Ironically enough, when people talk about seeking "higher states of consciousness" (of both major varieties, including druggies and religious types), they're usually actually looking for a lower state of consciousness: something approximating the hallucinogenic and passive state of normal sleep while not quite being unconscious.

Going to a higher level of consciousness is simply pushing your imagination to a higher level. Since there is no limit to the imagination you conceptualise at a more creative level. Atheists think scientifically and logically. Everything has a natural explanation. This rules out silly superstitious beliefs that we are here because something magic happened.

Salam w Alaikum sister :-) "Learn the art of patience. Apply discipline to your thoughts when they become anxious over the outcome of a goal. Impatience breeds anxiety, fear, discouragement and failure. Patience creates confidence, decisiveness, and a rational outlook, which eventually leads to success." -Brian Adams Ways of developing strong patience is to first asses what is causing you impatience. Secondly, you should then change your attitude about the cause. Thirdly, remind yourself that time is not an issue - thus developing a strong patient mind. If you tell yourself "Allah swt and the hereafter are the only things that matter" inshaAllah your heart and mind will collaborate on the idea.

I understand meditation allows one to attain a "higher level" of consciousness.

I'm more conscious when I'm awake than I am when I'm asleep. Some coffee or Ritalin might add to the affect.

That would be the level I'm at when I'm not sleeping or impaired in some way.

    Define "level of consciousness."

its called practice and it doesn't happen overnight. Buddha believed that! I believe it. It is changing your thinking.
