Is vegetarian food available in Italy?

I am a vegetarian and would be travelling to Italy soon. I have eggs occasionally. Would I have to stick to croissants and salads only for vegetarian food? Are there Italian vegetarian dishes...what one does have to ask for in restaurants?

There are maybe not as many places here that are not strictly vegetarian, but it's not all that difficult to order vegetarian things off the many. Many risottos, for example, do not have meat. Try the risotto alla Milanese (with saffron) or risotto alla parmigiana - when they ask if you want aceto balsamico, say yes. You don't want a risotto alla pilota since that has sausage. here are lots of pasta dishes that don't have meat like spagheti aglio, olio e peperoncino (garlic, oil & red pepper flakes). There are many other choices - even peperoni pizza. Here peperoni is bell pepper.
