  • Long Term Capital Gains from Residential Property?

I have recently sold my residential property which I held for about 10 years. I am aware that the profit that I have earned from it after indexation has to be reinvested in residential property to avoid the long term capital gains tax. But I do not know if this profit has to be entirely invested in only ONE property or can be invested in TWO properties to avoid payment of the capital gains tax. Can anyone clarify this please ?

  • Are these A level subjects the right choice for admission to good Universities?

I have opted for AS Level English and Maths, and A level in Economics, Business Studies and Geography. A few days back I learnt that Business Studies will not be considered for admission to good universities. Is there any good university which would consider my subjects favourably?

  • Do I have to take up maths in high school to study commerce/management in good universities?

I am in Year 12 (AS-Level), I need to select my options. I'm sure I want to pursue a career in Management. Although I have done maths at GCSE, I was thinking of leaving out maths henceforth ad instead do Environmental Management, my other subjects are Business Studies, Economics, English Lang. and Geography. So if I drop Maths would I have a chance to get into a good university for under grads in management? I was thinking about universities in the UK, US and Canada.

  • Should I take Economics with Business Studies (in IB Diploma) to study Commerce in University?

I have decided on doing Business Studies (HL) for IB diploma. I am a bit confused about the other subjects that would be a good combination with it for University. Some say that Psychology is a must and some say that Economics would go very well with Business Studies. Can you suggest some good and useful ( from Univ point of view) combinations? How difficult is Eco (HL) ?

  • Where do we have to keep luggage in Italian trains?

1.Does one have to keep travel boxes/suitcases/luggage near the exits in various trains in Italy? Somebody told me that these have to be kept near the exit doors in Eurostar. Is this true? Can we not take these with us inside the train?

    2. Also what is the best time to take trains from say Rome-Sorrento, Florence-Aosta and Sorrento-Naples?

    3. Are Rome-Sorrento buses overcrowded? Does one have to jostle and get into buses in Italy or is there a queuing system? Are bus journeys easier than trains?

  • How risky is it to move around in Italy? Apart from pick-pocketing is there mugging too?

I hear that while travelling in trains, luggage has to be strapped to the overhead bin and while staying in hotels, to the bedframe in the hotel room, to keep it safe from snatch-and-run thieves. Also someone suggested travelling with a high tech door alarm, or else leaning a chair with few noisy items on it against the inside of the door so it will tip over and crash when an unwanted intruder slips in at night.

Is it really this bad...its so scary !! I might have to keep an eye on my things all the time instead of enjoying what good Italy has to offer.

Also, more importantly, is there mugging? Especially near the main railway stations? Is it dangerous to be going around the railway stations area after sunset? How safe is it to stay in hotels near railway stations. for e.g. near the Termini station in Rome?

What does a tourist do if things are stolen/ pickpocketed? Do police help?

  • How crowded are trains in Italy - both Italian Railway and Eurail?

I'm travelling to Italy in another 3 days and plan to cover all the main cities by train. Can anyone staying in Italy guide me on these points:

    a) Are the trains very crowded...is it very difficult getting in / getting out with luggage from trains?

    b) Do people let others get in/ get out easily or do they block the entrances/ exits such that passengers have to squeeze themselves in / out?

    c) Are there peak hours for crowds ?...so that I can avoid these times if possible.

    d) How long do the trains halt at stations?

    e) What precautions should I take in the trains to be and feel safe ?...I've heard thso mucat there is bag grabbing, pick-pocketing etc.

    f) Is it possible to reserve seats while purchasing tickets for small journeys?

    g) Do people in Italy understand English? How do I communicate?

After I made all the bookings, I'm beginning to develop cold feet.

  • Does being a school prefect help in university admission?

Teachers select prefects. And if the teacher who interviews you is biased or prejudiced for no apparent reason, you stand to lose the position. So even a very capable person may not be able to become a prefect. Will universities recognise this problem?
