Why do all life forms on Earth contain Carbon?

Is it because Carbon is among the "free-est" of substances with an incredibly high amount of potentiality and versatility?

Update:

Perhaps...but what does flexibility have to do with its inclusiveness with life? Is Carbon the most unnatural natural substance? IDK I'm losing it.

Read "The Answer" part of this link, which explains why carbon is the most probable element all over the universe for life, that man is aware of. http://imagine.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/ask_astro/answer...

We could discover a new element somewhere that gives a better explanation, but right now The Answer is correct.

it is never the carbon element by its self , it is always a compound that involves carbon , and it is never the same compounds in all the life forms , it varies .

the only thing that all the life forms on earth have in common is water , and water only.

It bonds easily, making it a useful (and readily available) molecule for replication (original life necessitates this be virtue of simplicity). look into abiogenesis for more.

yup! i think its due to the flexibily of carbon and its ability to join to almost everything
