Poll For Indians Residing In India: Do You Find NRIs Tend To Display An Air Of Superiority?

I find many NRIs acting like they are big shots. The attitude they carry, their show-off, "fake" behaviour are some things which put me off. Why do they feel that they are superior to the rest just because they live in a foreign land and enjoy a better quality of life? Is it because they actually have a subconscious inferiority complex which they are trying to cover up?

And when they return to India, they start complaining about the water being impure, the standards of hygiene etc etc when the fact is, their immunity system has become weak living a sheltered life wrapped in cotton wool overseas.

I come under the category of NRIs too, so I am not being biased here. In fact I come into contact with them in daily life, and can only speak from my experiences interacting with them.

Update:

If I'm asked to quantify, I'd say 6 in 10 have heads too large for their shoulders. The rest are great people, no doubt...

I find most of them tend to have a massive chip on their shoulders. They live in ivory towers and do not have the understanding to realize the world beyond them

My brother for example, he spent all his life in this Chennai heat, yet when he came back from S'Pore he was acting as if he has been to this Chennai heat for the first time, ofcourse that incident was trivial but just saying how people tend to change

To add to some of then things you have said I find most of these "animal activists" to be NRI's lol, I mean they talk things that are meant to be followed on in US, they talk about taking care of stray dogs when they are vast number of people ,who cannot take care of themselves, who are starving to death because of poverty, isnt it an irony?

Its like when they go to a foreign country, they enjoy a better quality of life and get better things.Since they have gone to a foreign country and enjoy better privileges, they think they have got something "more" in them than their fellow citizens that has made them get such an experience or having got such an experience, they tend to think they have acquired something "more" than their fellow citizens.Ofcourse they have got or acquired something more, but none of it can really justify them to think they're superior than others.Since they think they have or acquired something "more" its very natural to think that they are superior than their fellow citizens.

Now whether they do it because of an inferiority complex is something that cannot be said to be true in all cases. Some like you say may do it as a defense mechanism to compensate for their inferior feelings while others are just plain too ignorant, arrogant and cocky that certain things just dont get inside their heads

  • Since NRIs have experienced the lifestyle and culture of two different places,so the comparison is bound to come there but I guess it depends on whether you actually "show" the comparison to others by constantly making condescending remarks and in a way insulting your home-country or not.

It's about modesty also. They know what kind of country they are living in,about it's developments and all and they also know how much developed their home-country is,still complaining regarding impure water and other things to make the natives realize the smallness of their own country is sure a disgrace.Perhaps, they need to be aware of it's positive side and that there home-country was the one which was able to send you at the place where you are living now and flaunting with that "NRI" tag!

EDIT:[Here I said in the context of Brain -Drain as well]

I wouldn't say much but what I find the funniest is that how their[I mean NRI's] every conversation starts with the usual "When I lived in America[or any other country],I used to do that but here it's not possible....." I mean the way they start yapping on about the greatness of being a NRI!

    I hate our 'home-made-still-a-firangi' people,you see! lol

Some are like that, not everyone though.'Desiness' is important too ;)

Hey Riya, I haven't come across this so far, infact I feel like they treat us nicer than if we were born and raised in India. I think as long as we don't show off or give them a reason to have a complex they won't have any problem with us. I think when we go to India we should act "Indian" by respecting the culture and following the norms of society, like the saying goes, "When in Rome, act Roman". When I am in India, I barely wear western clothes and if I do, I put an abaya over it cuz I just don't want to stand out of the crowd and make myself look different from everyone else. Ofcourse the second I open my mouth everyone knows I am not from India, lol. Anyways this is what works for me :)

  • Absolutely wrong. I am an NRI, and I don't think so. I adopt what is in India. May it be right or wrong, it is part of my nation. What is experience in a foreign nation is a different culture and different experience. My regular experience is what I experience in India.

If you had some unpleasant experience with some, it is not good to generalize that.

  • Yes, unfortunately yes.........

It is very common these days. They want to show how foreign they have become by going outside India. And in India, someone who is from foreign is the one deserving a lot of respect.

I think even the NRIs forget the Indian culture and tradition once they go to other countries. The speak in the same dialect of the country's language. They behave in a very sophisticated way.....

I carry mineral water everywhere I go, but only because it's really hot and we always have to travel visiting relatives who live god knows where and temples....and sometimes we eat street food, and their water isn't good.

I am not arrogant nor do I demand anything..I live in India just like a normal Indian..I don't go shopping in big malls either..I shop in markets, eat at dhaba's and just chill with my cousins.

I bloody hate the foreign life..its fake and a lot of my NRI friends have a pole up their crack, they call themselves Indians when they are abroad..but then they are in India, they call themselves American or whatever. They come to India and complain about pollution, traffic, people, smell etc. They just don't understand that we are developing nation.

I think you are right but this is not the case for me

    .

    .

    .

When I visit India, I live like I was living before, I even enjoy more.

I live my entire year in just that 1 month of my vacation in India.

I like roadside eateries, I drink their water, I don't carry a bottle of mineral water everywhere I go.

I like spending time with all kinds of people, I don't run away from them thinking that they stinks or whatever. I agree that the quality of life is better in foreign countries but we just don't love to live there.

I, proud to be an Indian and a Hyderabadi.

    No no i m not act like that and i don't think,its 100% truth...

villagers and small town people also said that metro people are trying to over-smart,and think Superior them-self... ! but that not true...

in metro you got all information and awareness,no matter you want it or not..you just take it there attitude and knowledge (more prefer word is informations)...thats not mean that they are more smarter than villagers.. because village have not much information, and may be have not sources to get it..so thats not there fault..its difference between village and metro..same as difference between metro in India and some other international metros..

may be you had some bad experience with NRI..but who understand reality and difference are not like that!!@#$$$v
