I'm confused on the common app/essays!?
How many essays do you have to submit to each college usually? When are the colleges essays usually up? Is the only essay you can start on now the personal statement?
That site did not help me. And you didn't answer all of my questions.

Your college essay can be written about anything. You should write about something personal. Letting the college know more about you than what is on your transcripts.
My daughter and her friends wrote about:
Having asthma
Having a brother with autism
Family travels outside of the US
Growing up in a bilingual family
Playing on the tennis team and academics.
Then a college application can ask you do a short essay on a specific question. Usually like, why do you want to go to our school. If a school's application is out then the prompt question will be on it. Most school are opening application right now for Fall of 2011.
My daughter applied to 6 colleges and only had to submit a personal essay to each of them. You should write your personal essay now, during the summer. She went through 4 drafts before she had her final paper to submit.
