My laptop battery will not charge, why is this?

The only way my laptop will work is when it is plugged in. I went to the control panel and looked at the power options and the battery is showing a red X over it and is showing 0% charged. No matter how long it is plugged in it will not charge. I tried taking the battery out (while it was shut down and unplugged) and putting it back in and that made no difference at all. Why is it doing this? It's like it just doesn't see that there is a battery there at all.

I have an Acer mini laptop with XP OS.

the best thing for batteries is to allow them to completely drain of power and then fully charge them... because people don't usually do this they tend to break down faster... even if you do this the battery will eventually die.

Batteries are a chemical reaction... as you drain electrons from the elements inside they degrade... when you charge the battery the electrons are replaced in the elements but not all of them ever get replaced... so eventually as more and more parts of the battery degrades the less charge it holds.. My laptop will not turn on now without being plugged in... its the nature of the beast.

this holds true for all batteries... car, phone, computer, it doesn't matter they all work on the same basic idea.
