I would like to replace my smoke detectors from 1999?
They are hard wired to the house. I only want to replace the outside part that is yellowed and old, and won't stop chirping although we have tried replacing batteries. The part that is attatched to the walls with all the wires is fine.
How do I know which model will attatch to the hardwired parts... can I just buy the outside piece or do I need to completely rewire the whole mess??
Right now, it appears that we have Firex 120-1072b model. I cannot find that for sale however, so surely firex has changed it since Sept 24, 1999.

The ENTIRE detector is either good or bad. The part that attached to the wall is a mounting plate, not an actual part of the detector. FORGET the model you currently have and replace ALL the units with matching detectors. As long as all the NEW units are the same, you will be fine. The only rewiring is inside the box right behind the wall plate.

You can use wire nuts, butt connectors, or plain old electrical tape to cover the metal ends of the wires, and then just tuck them up out of the way and leave them there. The big thing to be aware of is that some areas have codes requiring the wired smoke detectors on buildings built after a certain year, so check with your local building authority before you remove the wired ones. If you are in such an area and are concerned about them not working during an electrical outage, just add a few of the battery powered ones in critical areas (like by bedrooms). If you are in one of these areas, you could get in a lot of trouble (fines) if you remove the wired ones, so make sure of the laws before you do so. I know this because I took classes and had a license for a while as a Home Inspector. I don't do it anymore because I went back into my previous career, but I still remember most of it. I hope this helps.

any new smoke detector will work to replace your old one...u can not just buy parts for your old one,,,you shouldn't have any problem installing one...turn off the power before removing the old unit...the new unit should have a black, a white and maybe a red wire....match these wires colors to the same wire colors in the ceiling...white to white, black to black...no need to hook up the red wire if no red wire is in the ceiling , ...the red wire is used if u have other smoke detectors in the home, the red wire when hook up will make all the smoke detectors work as one so if there is smoke then they will all go off in the house at the same time

if its the same brand then the plug that goes into the smoke detector may be the same as the existing plug you have
