1995 Chevy S10 Blazer Temperature Gauge Problem?

We just bought this blazer and have practically rebuilt the whole thing. We replaced the thermostat and both temperature sensors and the sending unit.

Now that we have it all put together it is running fine, the check engine light isn't on......

But as soon as I crank it up the temperature gauge maxes out and then the check gauges light comes on. The engine doesn't seem to be running hot. We have no idea what could be causing this to happen.

Thanks for your help!

Update:

4.3L Vortec is the engine

OK, my Ford contour did the exact same thing. As soon as I started the car the gauge would be pegged hot and the check engine light came on. Mine turned out to be the sending unit though. My car had two sending units, one turned on the radiator fans and the other does the gauge. Is it possible you got a bad sending unit or didn't find the correct one on your car? If you list which engine you have I can look up the locations for you. I have a 97 S10 with a 4.3 V6.
