Why does my whitewash turn brown?

I searched high and low for hydrated lime and finally found it! Made a paste with lime and salt and water, used a stiff brush and got going on the wooden fence. It turned a lovely white when it dried, and I was well pleased with it. However, as soon as it gets wet, in heavy rain etc., it turns a muddy brown, until it dries out again, when it goes back to being nice and white :( Is that normal? What did I do wrong?

I don't know anything about whitewash except it's a very old method of painting. Didn't know it was still used.

Usually, when a white goes brown it's because the colour of the wood seeps through. Do the knots show through more than the rest? Give the knots a dab before you paint the whole thing.

I would use a couple of coats of sealer primer. In Canada it's called Bin ( funny name ) Wherever you are there must be an equivalent Ask at a good paint store or ask their advice.

Should do the trick as it works on brand new wood, never leaks through.

    Good luck.
