I was posted to Gander with the military, and took time to look around, as I figured I would likely never go there as a tourist. I found that there are some really neat things to see, but they are great distances apart.

E.g., L'Anse Aux Meadows, the Viking village. Not a lot to actually see, but it is a very cool place, and well worth going to. However, it is up at the top, a long drive from anywhere. The drive is nice, and there were some lovely camping spots on the way, a natural arch along the shore, the Maritime Archaic site at Port au Choix, and great scenery. If you like rocks, trees, and a rocky coastline, it is well worth it.

They are very proud of Gros Morne National Park there. It is definitely nice, but having lived in BC, where the hills are much bigger than Nfld mountains, not so impressive. But, if you come from a flat area, it is nice.

St. Johns is great - history, interesting architecture, and lots to see. There are other things too on the island, but, again, they tend to be small, and far apart.
