Atheists, theists, and everyone else, is this a fair solution for the same-sex marriage issue?
And please state why or why not.
Also please note for the record that this is not a reflection of my own opinion on the subject, it's just a question. All opinions will be respected here.
Since the government refuses to step up and decide whether or not it's unconstitutional to refuse same-sex couples the right to marry, would it be fair if it was still left up to the people, but in the states in which same-sex marriage was not passed, they were at least forced to recognize same-sex marriages? In other words, a same-sex couple from South Carolina could go to New York and get married, and their marriage would still be recognized by state law in South Carolina, even though they weren't married there. So it would be basically like anyone else's marriage, except that the marriage license wasn't issued in their home state.
And I'm not talking about making this a permanent solution, since society could very well change its views on same-sex marriage in the future. It would just be a temporary solution in the meantime. Is it fair? Or at least fairer than it is now?
In your answer, please also state your religion/lack thereof, but please don't tell me whether you think same-sex marriage is right or wrong. That isn't the question here. I'm just interested in whether or not it's fair (or at least fairer) in your personal opinion. Thanks in advance to all for your answers!
Again: This is not a reflection of my own opinion. It's only a question. I'm not stating my opinion in this. I'm just interested in everyone else's thoughts.
I'm also not giving any thumbs-down.

Fair? No. Fairer than it is now? Sure.
It's just a matter of time before the Supreme Court is forced to strike down all laws denying same-sex marriage at the Federal level on 14th Amendment grounds.
The only question is, what's taking them so long? I hope they realize history will not judge them kindly for their inaction while the Constitution was being systematically violated state-by-state.
seeker of jehovah - "no its not
no one state can tell another state what they must do"
No, but the Supreme Court can tell *any* and *all* states that they're not allowed to violate people's 14th Amendment rights.

So basically, you're just asking different states to decide if they'd like to inconvenience gays by making them drive out-of-state to get their marriage licenses and file the paperwork?
You're also assuming that states can let out-of-state people file a marriage license with them. Typically, states only give out marriage licenses to residents of that particular state. So no, I don't think your proposed solution could even be put into place.
For generations, there have already been gay couples who have been living together in long-term monogamous relationships, buying houses together, sharing checking accounts, and even adopting children. Why it should be an "issue" for them to be able to file a joint 1040 tax return, I have no idea.
The only reason why this is an "issue" is because some Christians are deluded in that they think they have a monopoly on term "marriage". They don't. There are already millions of non-Christians who are married in this country, and thus don't see marriage as a Biblical thing. It is a LEGAL status. Uncle Sam DOES NOT CARE whether a couple gets married by a pastor in a church, by a Justice of the Peace in a courthouse, in the woods by an ordained Wiccan priestess, or in Las Vegas by an Elvis impersonator. If you file for a marriage license and do the paper work, you're married.

I believe every one should work on there own problems and stay out of other people business. What's right for one person may no be right for another but the other should just keep there stinking mouth shut and let others live there lives. The so called moral majority has the most crooked, greedy people in it, if they need something to do clean your own house first.

Atheist, married. I think it should be legal because it's unfair for it not to be! Why was I allowed to fall in love and get married but these people can't? So unfair. I think their marriage should be recognized just like what you said. It could be more fair but I get what you mean, in the meantime. It will take a long time for SC but hey you never know.

Two consenting adults should have the right to get married. Period. It is no one else's business but their own, and they aren't hurting anyone by making their longterm relationship official in the eyes of the law and their families. If you don't agree with same-sex marriages, in my opinion, you should just not have one. The end.

Thinking that just because 2 people are the same gender is somehow hurting people or against the ideals of marriage, that is truly an obstruction of freedom.

I think that's fairer than the current restrictions on same-sex marriages.

Everyone who wants a gay marriage would just go to states where having one is legal, then. It wouldn't solve anything, regardless of what your agenda is- it would just make the situation we have now more widespread.

It's fairer than it is currently but it would still make the person feel like a second-rate citizen.

I think it sounds like total chaos. Civil unions would make much better sense in all states.
