Is a 61 key keyboard worth the money?

I really want to buy a keyboard. I took piano in school last year but this year my schedule doesnt have room for piano. I miss playing it and I want to get one of my own so that I dont completely lose all the progress I`ve made and forget how to play it.

I am a musician, but only have knowledge of string instruments. It seems like the only keyboards for a reasonable price that are for sale anywhere are 61 keys. Seeing that a real piano has 88 keys, is a 61 key just a toy? Im thinking that once I progress more in my piano book, I will have to use the high and low keys that wont be there on a 61 key piano. Would a 74 key piano be a bit better?

I am a high school student, and dont make that much money. I`m certainly not going to go out and purchase a 600 dollar 88 key keyboard!

Update:

I mean 76, not 74

    Hi JC,

No, a 61 key, keyboard is not a toy. I own the Yamaha midi 61 keyboard and believe me it sounds like the London and New York Symphony when my song is finished. All I can suggest is have at look at--YAMAHAPKCLUB--and see what your budget will allow, and good luck in whatever you do, If you want to hear one of my songs I live at--fender183@hotmail.com--. Cheers, Eric.

If you already play something, you're soon going to outgrow a 61-key keyboard. So my advice would be to buy a keyboard with more keys (such as one with 76). I had a 61-key keyboard for almost a year (but learning on my own) and sometimes I felt sad that there where pieces I wanted to play which required more keys.

But the best advice I could give you is to buy at least a keyboard or electronic piano with weighted keys (the Casio PX-120 it's a pretty decent digital piano for it's price and it's about $500, I believe).

If you can't, for whatever reason, then you should buy a 76-key keyboard so you'll not outgrow it too quickly (also make sure that is 'touch sensitive'!). :)
