I need help re-potty training my dog.?
I have a 1yr & 3month old matese/poodle that is currently trained to go to the bathroom outside. My situation has recently changed and I need to re-train him to go inside. when he was younger we initially tried to wee wee pad train him but he kept wanting to play with the pad and eat it. So we gave up and trained him to go outside.
This time around I bought one of those fake patches of grass in hopes that he would just catch on. He hasn't. He's a very smart dog so I know he will catch on eventually but the problem lies with me. I dont know how to correctly teach him to go on it without making him scared of it.
I tried positive reinforcement. We played a game where he follows me around the house and whenever he stand on it or smells it, I praise him and give him a treat.
Also when I know he has to go I'll put his leash on and instead of walking him outside I'll walk him over to the potty patch and stand there with him. I stood there for over 30 minutes not letting him move. It didn't work. He iust got really frustrated and started pulling. He eventually just layer down and did nothing.
So then I took him outside and brought the potty patch with me. When he started peeing I picked him up and put him on it and praised him when he was done.
Can anyone help and tell me if I'm doing this wrong? Am I scaring him more then helping him? What other methods should I try?

You had the right idea- but you need to stick with it. If this dog is kennel trained I suggest you use it now. You probably know when he has to defecate and pee since you have had him for so long. Using your leash is key. Using the kennel will be too- If it takes him 40 minutes to go after eating you should wait until he asks to go out and then leash him up and take him to the area you wish to have him go. If he just stands there for 10 minutes doing nothing place him in the kennel for 15 minutes. This will force him to hold it so that when you come to let him out he will have to go more urgently. When you let him out of the kennel be sure to pick him up or keep him close on the leash so that he doesnt have a chance to squat before you get to the pad/fake grass. place him on it again for 10 minutes. If he does nothing than put him back in the kennel for 15 mins again and repeat until he uses the area. Then make a big deal if he goes on it. Only use the good treats for when he uses the area as a bathroom and he will start to associate that as the correct place to go. If you do not kennel then you will have to hold the dog in your lap in place of the kennel. If you take a weekend to do this he is sure to pick up on where to go. But basically for now you need to make sure there is no other option but to do his business on the pad/fake grass by only allowing him to go there when he has to go and this will mean making him hold it- either by kennel or lap.
