The U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder acts independently and has determined that the Arizona law violates the Constitution on two issues at least: the issue of jurisdiction, since FEDERAL takes precedence over state on immigration issues; and the racial profiling inherent to the misguided law requiring law enforcement officers to focus on brown skin color or Hispanic accents or speech to basically ASSUME GUILT and then require whomever they decide on a whim to stop to PROVE INNOCENCE (NOT the American way). What President Obama DOES understand is the fear and frustration many Americans feel during these rough economic times regarding the flood of illegal immigrants which were permitted throughout the TOTALITARIAN years of Republican rule (2001 through 2007) and the final two years of the Bush/Cheney presidency (when laws were NOT enforced, as nightly pointed out by an irrascible Lou Dobbs on his CNN broadcast for years). If you go to whitehouse.gov, click on Issues and then on Immigration, you will learn that the Obama administration has been working on the problem of illegal immigration all along, including former Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano, now head of Homeland Security, who is checking ALL vehicles that cross instead of just random checks, curtailing gun-running from both sides of the border as well as drug-smuggling or transporting illegals, and deporting at least 3X as many illegals as did the Bush administration, beefing up border security (including use of more canine units), and most recently using U.S. troops as allowed by law. Just because states want to violate our Constitution does not mean that the Department of Justice should allow these illegal actions to go unchallenged. There are BETTER METHODS available: Go after employers with ESCALATING penalties that include prison; eliminate all taxpayer-funded benefits or social safety nets by having the illegal immigrants coming in to apply, then requiring proof of citizenship (NOT racial profiling when done this way, and the applicants will have provided their addresses and contact numbers to make things easier for immigration services; have an immigration official present in each benefits office so that anyone not able to show legal residency can be referred for immediate investigation...I think this is a MUCH better policy. Eliminate the reasons they come (jobs, benefits) and they will not be so eager to get here...makes sense, doesn't it? Democrats are trying to uphold the Constitution; right-wing racists are attempting to VIOLATE the law in order to "fix" violations of the law---doesn't work. Two wrongs do NOT make a right.
