Setting up an external monitor?

So my laptop's screen died, and I am trying to set up an external monitor until I can send it in for repair. Even if the screen is broke(likely a burnt out backlight), I should still be able to set this up right? And I have an HDTV I could use, so I would need to purchase HDMI cables, correct? Also, how much do basic cables like this cost? Thanks for the help!

depends on what you're going to hook it up to...l most "monitors" use either vga or dvi, some even hdmi. if yo're going to use a tv, depends on the inputs there as well as the outputs on the laptop.

if you use a vga, which almost all laptops have and a regular monitor w/ vga, you simply plug it in and use the display toggle switch on the function keys, use the fct key if nec. ie fct+f3 or f4 depending on which has the little pictures of monitors on it...

i fyou intend to use another interface, this depends on the graphics card and if yuou can contgol it w/o the monitor working properly in the first place...
