Did I get lucky balancing the carbs?

I had a trip to take only a few hundred miles away and neede to sync the carbs. I have been doing this for umpteen years, but went to get the syncs out and the mercury was screwed up and had air pockets, so i was stuck. I said screw it, and did it by experience and my ears. they were way off, since I had just installed an Ivans jet kit in it recently. Just before leaving , I said hell with it and went to the parts store and bought 4 vacuum gauges and hooked it all up and they cylinders were dead nutz on the money both at high idle and at low idle. I couldnt believe it. Did I get lucky or what?. Theres no point to this question other than bragging about my hip pocket carb tuning day. During the trip , I found some areas that allowed me to open it up and enjoy life at 165 while the fuel system cleaner did its thing.

Update:

I have an IR heat gun also. I use it to assist in diagnosing misses and other things. believe it or not, I thought about using it that day while I was syncing them but didnt. Good thinking...

Update 2:

165 is about the fastest I can go on it without front end lift lol. I only weigh a buck-55 lol.

    You must have done something wrong.....it was only doing 165?? hahahaha!

    Edit: Nah man....165 is crazy fast...its nice to get em up there every once in awhile. Our photo radar cameras go offline tomorrow too.......I just may have to go test them and see if they are really off....lol

    One trick I use to check carburetor sync, is I use a Fluke digital volt meter with a infrared temperature sensor. I crank up the engine and monitor the header pipes close to the engine to see if they all four heat up evenly.

    This method is a lot less painful than the old way of licking your fingers and touching the headers!
